Wrong John Kerry Gets NY Electoral Votes

WASHINGTON - Even John Q. Public knows the middle initial of losing presidential candidate John F. Kerry. But New York's 31 electoral college votes are currently on the books for some guy named John L. Kerry.

State officials acknowledged the mistake Tuesday after the official "certificate of vote" appeared on the Web site of the National Archives.

The document was sent to officials and archivists in Washington and Albany, N.Y., as well as to Columbia University in New York, before the error was spotted.

28. How do you envision that
Practically speaking, how would a state, city, territory, etc. go about successfully seceding?

8. Okay. Calm down, and please don't say that.
Tolerance should be extended to Christians as well. What would you say if on 9/12 Bush said "America was raped by Mohammad?"

12. Perfectly valid votes, zann.
The first man named "John L. Kerry" to come forward may claim them.

Since there is also one electoral vote for John "Ewards," I am holding out hope that I can get one of the remaining electoral votes in my name. It would be the perfect Yuletide gift!

26. "perfection" isn't what any sane person was asking for. Competence
is more like it. This is the US Presidential Election for god's sake. There is NO excuse for a typo like that!

18. The Explanation Is...
They were confused by the butterfly ballot -- they had actually meant to vote for Pat Buchanan.

22. I thought they had to challenge specific votes.
I seriously doubt Hillary is going to challenge NY electoral votes.

Although, I must say, that would be ironic.

24. So 1 EV to "John Ewards," 31 EVs to "John L. Kerry"...
Edited on Wed Dec-22-04 02:49 PM by high density
That leaves John F. Kerry with 220 EVs, assuming the rest of the electors know who the heck they're voting for.

25. I wonder if this was Rove's backup plan.
Kerry wins in November, but Bush wins on a technicality when all of NY's votes 'mistakenly' go to John L Kerry because of some 'clerical' error made, coincidentally, by some low-level Republican on some printed form.

27. Red State Rebel..The Electors voted correctly on their BALLOTS
for John F Kerry. The error was in the typing of the document certifying all 31 electoral votes for Kerry. So their votes stand. It was a typo in the document and nothing more. "The ballots were correct, but for some reason with this document when it was typed up, nobody caught it in the proofing, including myself," said New York Department of State spokesman Peter Constantakes."
http://www.nydailynews.com/front/breaking_news/story/264195p-226227c.html It has since been corrected. NY goes to Kerry.

This isn't like the elector in Minnesota that voted for Edwards on his ballot. Thats a big difference. Once a ballot is cast it can't be taken back. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/ap/20041214/ap_on_re_us/ohio_electoral_college

As far as some of you calling the electors "idiots", that's uncalled for, they did nothing wrong. If you ask me, the real idiots are in the states who gave their electoral votes to bush. These are the places that ought have a giant billboard of a "monkey" bush to greet them.
