BBV: Possible flaw triggers electronic voting concerns
The strange case of an election tally that appears to have popped up on the Internet hours before polls closed is casting new doubts about the trustworthiness of electronic voting machines.

During San Luis Obispo County's March 2002 primary, absentee vote tallies were apparently sent to an Internet site operated by Diebold Election Systems Inc., the maker of the voting machines used in the election.

The GOP wrote the law to allow the makers of the touch screen systems to program the tabulating software in secret. No reviews or audits. NO RECOUNTS can be done because there is nothing to review.

NO PUBLIC DISCLOSURE is allowed to vasrify the software is counting properly...it gets much worse when you dig into it.

That means the entire mechanism that is used to count our votes is held in secret by a handful of GOP controlled companies.

This has the potential to truly become the death of Democracy.

5. Diebold's investigating. What a relief
:eyes:

Is this the first big public uncovering of problems with the optical scan? -I know Bev wrote about this case here a few days ago, but I didn't ken to it being the scan machines.

What's the suggestion to correct them? Personal collection of the vote totals from precincts?

15. Between Diebold looking into this, and Arnold opening the books
up to Arthure Anderson, or Accenture, or whomever, I'm sure we're all in good hands.

16. Very comforting indeed...
Especially when the Diebold rep says condescendingly...

"These activists don't understand what they're looking at," Seiler said.

Oh, but I think they DO understand what they are looking at, and it scares the hell out of all of us!

6. DOUBLE AGENT?!
Quote:

County clerk-recorder Julie L. Rodewald said she was "concerned" about the results winding up online, but she has no plans to get rid of Diebold equipment.

I'd be kicking that crap to the curb immediately!

9. Am glad to see
That the reporter mentions computer programmers saying they know BBV is full of potential 'mistakes.' This baby is up and flying. The end of large scale elections fixing is near the end of it's run. If it ain't, democracy is doomed.

10. Gaffe Casts Doubts on Electronic Voting
Sep 10, 4:41 PM (ET)

By RACHEL KONRAD

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - The strange case of an election tally that appears to have popped up on the Internet hours before polls closed is casting new doubts about the trustworthiness of electronic voting machines.

During San Luis Obispo County's March 2002 primary, absentee vote tallies were apparently sent to an Internet site operated by Diebold Election Systems Inc., the maker of the voting machines used in the election.

At least that's what timestamps on digital records showed.

County election officials say the unexplained gaffe probably didn't influence the vote, and Diebold executives - who only recently acknowledged the lapse - say voters should have confidence in the election process.<snip>

11. I'm glad this has
finally hit the mainstream media. Lets see how diebold and the election officals (who seem to represent the company than the People) spin this one.

13. Answer to e-voting problems
I just do not understand why you computer savvy Democrats do not quietly set up the mechanism to hack the Diebold System and steal the elections in the most strategic locations from under the noses of those who have developed and supported the system.

Then they cannot complain - can they?

I am preparing a paper on Data Privacy and Security of Information Exchange for the New Delhi Conference on e-goverance. Anyone with inputs are welcome to send them to me.

A paragraph or two from Bev would certainly not be out of place.

that they're getting those absentee ballots counted good and early. When I was a deputy supervisor of elections, we threw 'em in the trash.
