An Apple for Miss Jenna? Bush Eyes Washington Teaching Job
Would this be a "public service" job?

First daughter Jenna Bush, who put her career plans on hold while campaigning to reelect her father, has decided to live in Washington and plans to teach at a District public school that serves low-income children. The White House would not release details yesterday, but we've learned that she has applied to teach at Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School in the Mount Pleasant/Columbia Heights neighborhood.

The school's founder and executive director, Linda Moore, wouldn't confirm Bush's employment, saying: "We don't discuss the relationship between a prospective employee and the school until we have a formal agreement. This is not something I'm at liberty to discuss."

Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for first lady Laura Bush, yesterday would say only that Jenna "will live in Washington and will go to work at a public school."

The Elsie Whitlow Stokes school has 250 pupils enrolled in kindergarten through sixth grade, features immersion classes in Spanish and French, and emphasizes community service. Its children, who are largely Hispanic and African American, visit soup kitchens and participate in an annual walk for the homeless.

45. Yes, but it's a charter school
Full of children whose parents took the initiative to get them in there. I hope they don't spin this as a typical "urban" school, because it sure as hell isn't.

Good luck, Jenna! Start by practicing getting by on 4-5 hours of sleep a day, and kiss your nightlife goodbye. Yeee hah!!!!

show only. I wonder how long she'll stay at this job. If she stays only a few months or substitute every once in awhile, this would look good and they can say "Jenna is doing such a meaningful job and she's trying to help the least fortunate among us" Members of the Bush Crime Family are phoney as hell. They will do about anything to put on a front. When these people do anything, we all need to look and pay attention to the whole picture.

Is this the son of Jeb, caught having sex in the back of his car in the parking lot of a Tallahassee mall and then got shipped off to a private boarding school in Jacksonville? Or is it the son of Jeb who was arrested for vandalizing his girl-friend's house when she tried to break off the relationship? Oh yea, the latter was George. You mean Jeb has a son or daughter that didn't get into trouble with the law?

You'll understand, I'm sure, if many of us take this with a considerable grain of salt.

Her father and his cronies have had nothing but contempt for public education. It's a bit disingenuous to see her embracing it now. One can be excused for thinking she (or they) have something up the sleeve.

From what I've seen, she's an alcoholic with no respect for the law, who can barely form a coherent sentence. She certainly can't speak in public.

28. Now's her chance to prove herself.
Will she teach full-time?

Will she last the whole term?

Will she join the union?

Quite a few of us managed to grow up before college--or instead of college. Not everyon has rich parents to pay 100%--no college jobs, no crippling loans. Many of our forces in Iraq joined in order to go to college--some have died.

She's given every sign of being spoiled & unappreciative of what was handed her for free. Now's her chance to correct that image.

103. I think The Family has her on a SHORT LEASH
They didn't want her to teach in Harlem because then she'd have the joys of NYC before her...and the bars NEVER CLOSE. In DC, the metro stops running earlier than Boston, fachrissake...they roll up the sidewalks. Sure, you can have a bit of fun down in Blues Alley, there are some good restaurants and whatnot, you can go from spot to spot in Georgetown for amusement, but it really is a lame nightlife, when looking at the BIG picture, if you are out of college. If you are still in college, those kids make their own fun, but she's supposedly past all that.

I swear, it's the short leash. Why else would she take this job rather than the one in Clinton's very safe neighborhood??? I doubt that she really likes that scummy private club she and sis go to in G-Town all that much...not much in there, hell, Tony Soprano's little hangout has more crap in it...

39. & Barbara wants to work w/ kids with AIDS in east. Europe & Africa? HAH!
Read the rest of this article (and by the way, Charter schools are NOT public schools, in that they have the right to pick and choose whom they will admit!)
(1) "sister Barbara wants to work with childrenwho have AIDS in Eastern Europe and Africa": or
(2) Barbara's career plans are nebulous at the moment; or
(3) the Bush sisters are frequently seen at Georgetown bars with a loyal group of friends;
(4) one of the above friends says the sisters plan to lease a Georgetown townhouse.

If Barbara ever had any serious career plans in the past four years, Yale provided a multitude of summer programs abroad and/or internships with relief organizations - I don't recall she ever got involved with any. I mean wouldn't that be a waste of her beautiful mind, as her namesake grandmother would describe it, dealing with pain and suffering in third world countries?

And it's the middle of the school year - so will Jenna just sort of hang out with the regular teachers or are they going to fire someone to make room for her? She'll probably be an "assistant" of some kind - one hopes so, because she's not described as certified as a teacher - did she even TAKE any early childhood education courses? - Can you picture her working full time and then taking night school classes in education? I picture her partying up a storm in Georgetown and showing up hungover at the school. If the kids have field trips, she can show them how to stick their toungs out through the window.
And the poster was spot on who pointed out that this kind of "job" can be described as "national service" and might be used to avoid the draft. Although we still have to wait and see exactly what language is used in the draft legislation when the pubs put it through.

95. Might this vary from state to state?
I've been told by parents of autistic children that the charter schools can avoid the "high maintenance" students, thereby increasing the per pupil cost to the public school system (this is in Pennsylvania.)

100. It might vary by state or district
It might also depend if the school is part of an existing school district (like a magnet school) in which case the district can decide who gets in, vs. being an independent school district in and of itself, in which case you have to admit anyone, because your district doesn't provide other alternatives.

I'm just asking that you don't assume all charter schools are private, or exclusive, because it definitely isn't the case for all of them. We can't refuse admission to any student that's eligible for public schools, and we get our share of high maintenance, autistic, LD, etc. students. We might even get more than our share, because sometimes the traditional public school is their first choice, and if they are failing there, the principal at the traditional school will try to get rid of them by recommending to the parents that they use us as an alternative school, even though that's not our mission. (We have a specific educational goal which is unrelated to whether a student is or isn't LD.)

Charter schools have a reputation of sucking away the highest achievers, but the reality is that traditional schools just as often take advantage of our existence by trying to shove off their worst test takers onto us so they have a better chance of meeting the NCLB criteria. And then they wonder why some charters (not ours, lucky for me) achieve lower test scores - they are sending us the kids that don't score well to begin with!

So while I am opposed to vouchers for private schools for a number of reasons, charters aren't taking money away from public schools - they ARE public schools (around these parts, anyway), and they are open to anyone.

(okay, end of rant.)

40. This is ridiculous...
Certified teachers in this country are jumping through hoops trying to become "highly qualified" under No Child Left Behind. I already have a teaching degree, and I am in the process of adding special education to my certification. I have to take 12 graduate classes, plus content area classes in order to be highly qualified.

Meanwhile, Jenna walks in off the street and gets a teaching job. Does she know how to teach a child to read? What about classroom management?

Don't those kids deserve a teacher who knows at least a tiny bit about teaching?

48. Every child in the US deserves a quality education! YES!
I am with you RT and you have my respect for the job you do.

Its a hard job with little reward, but education is the only way to build a strong nation. Many children would never have any self esteem if it were not for caring teachers! I was fortunate to have several teachers who taught me to really question, analyze and think for myself.

GOD Bless Ms Kennedy 7th grade civics, it took me years to understand how radical she was! I love this woman for what she gave me. (no off color remarks please)

Mr. Stivers 8th grade civics, he made me understand that I was an equal member of the class and that my voice counted!

Ms Hensley 9th grade science, sternly tolerated my antics and took time with me.

These people opened my mind, I wish I could find them and let them know what kind of impact they had on my life. Of course I learned from other teachers, but these 3 are the light turn-ner on-ners! All were teaching in public schools.

I cant see a Bush family member having the kind of intelligence, patience and/or compassion teaching requires. That's just my opinion!

Carry on your good work RipTide :hi:

footsteps of Nixon's daughter Julie who took a teaching job and then conveniently had to bow out when a book cart somehow injured her foot before the first day of school. The foot healed, but she never went back.

Being a Bush, Jenna will reap all sorts of good publicity about this "inner city" job - which won't last long before she retires to her favorite watering hole.

http://www.sethdmichaels.com/archives/000064.html

"So we're hanging out ... The Bushes were underage drinking at my house. When I checked outside, one of the Secret Service guys asked me if they'd be spending the night. I said no. And then I go upstairs to see another friend and I can smell the green wafting out under his door. I open the door, and there he is smoking out the Bush twins on his hookah."

Admittedly, that would be quite the commute from the swank Georgetown neighborhood she plans on moving into.

As a product of the DC public school system, I resent any member of the Bush crime family cynically exploiting "inner-city" kids in DC and our pitiful public school system to make themselves look like some kind of concerned noble do-gooders.

If they were really serious, that slob Jenna would live in a homeless shelter over in Southeast and get a job at Ballou Senior High. I bet she'd last about 2 minutes, Secret Service and all.

in the school district i work in, teachers don't get to 'choose' a grade to teach; i.e., 'fourth grade'.

105. The Personnel Specialist and the Principal should be fired!

This fast little number has been PHOTOGRAPHED drunk and on the floor.

Repeatedly in bars, underage drinking etc.

This is not hearsay, this is FACT.

It is also a FACT that she stuck her tongue out while campaigning for her father.

She does NOT display ANY values that would serve as ROLE MODELS for the children.

Her pictures were all over the tabloids, cigarette in mouth and drink in hand ON THE FLOOR!

When a teacher is interviewed school districts are to consider the moral values of the potential teacher.

There have been times when the teacher has done something that no one in the community knows about.

But this is not the case, all you have to do is stand in line at Ralph's to see her picture on the floor and drunk.

No child deserves this as a role model. To put this idiot on the backs of poor children is the last straw.

I am going to write the Principal a letter!

. . . so far, she's shown herself to be nothing but a spoiled brat.

And I agree -- she and her equally pampered sis should be shipped off to the war. But it ain't gonna happen.

My best hope is that, via this experience, she DOES get a glimpse at the real world and has an epiphany. After all, the younger Reagan kids shunned their father's ilk and became their own people in their own right.
