Bloomberg asks vice president not to come to main 9-11 ceremony

NEW YORK -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg has asked Vice President Dick Cheney not to attend the city's World Trade Center anniversary ceremony because Cheney's security would have "inconvenienced" family members of victims, the mayor said Wednesday.

"Because of concerns that the increased security measures required for vice presidential travel would have inconvenienced or delayed family members, I have asked Vice President Cheney to attend a memorial service later in the day honoring fallen Port Authority officers and employees, instead of the morning's commemoration at the World Trade Center site," Bloomberg said in a statement.

A call to Cheney's office was not immediately returned

Hmmmm….is it just because of security measures or could there be more to it than that….hmmmm

1. Wise Move
I wondered about Darth attending and protestors. It would be hard to not protest Cheney coming to ceremony. Let the families remember in peace.

2. They can control the port authority crowd but not the civilians.
which is why Shrub isn’t coming either. Victims’ families can’t be screened and I’m certain quite a few would let him know what they think.

3. WOW!
That's a real surprise, and a pleasant one at that. Looks like even Bloomberg is starting to wake up to how people are beginning to feel about Shrub and his exploitation of 9/11 for his own greedy political purposes. I've heard that NYC generally has total disdain and disgust for the Bushistas, particularly the NYPD and the NYFD, and rightfully so!

6. This reflects the sorry state of affairs
that is the * "presidency".

Can you imagine Bill Clinton, or Al Gore for that matter, being asked to "stay away".

So much for how much this "president is loved".

Enough of the propaganda.

Not only is the emperor naked, he's stupid as hell too.

7. Real brave people, cannot and will not stand before "real" people
and answer questions. The snaggletoothed spawn of Satan has a lot of explaining to do to the people of New York.

I wonder if Mr. and Mrs. all of America will notice that neither the pRes or VP is there and will not wonder why?

12. Just the opposite, I think.....
I'll bet they asked Bloomberg to make this statement so they had cover to avoid the ceremony. I think it would have been a very ugly scene and this administration which remains unaccountable for their actions, cannot be put in a place where they don't control the event.

21. I can't agree
this looks bad for Bush/Cheney -- any way you cut it.

Regardless of their being granted with an instant "excuse", people expect their leaders to lead.

Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 12:21 PM by 0007
To honor the dead firefighters and and victims?

However I do think your right. He would have caused an uproar or a riot for sure after re-thinking the issue.

He'll be a no show all day in NYC - junior will be pissed and all his whore constituents

9. Cost NYC HUGE $$$$$ to "Host" the TinMan...
You think Chimpy gets the "Banana Republican" treatment when he comes to town, Cheney's "needs" make some of those rock-star contracts you see at "smoking gun" look pretty tame.

It's not enough to close the street that TinMan rides down, he wants the people in houses along the route "disappeared" until he's gone, too.

If I was Mayor of a city, and TinMan didn't have a direct bearing on what was going on (like a campaign fundraiser that the RNC would foot part of the bill for) I'd tell him I couldn't afford to have him visit too.

11. They died for Halliburton
That would have made a good protest sign. And a true one, if you think that Cheney and Bush were more interested in protecting their oil buddies than the people in the U.S. before 9/11 (as well as after).

29. DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! Winner!
I was just thinking that NO Bush presence in this would be welcome, since a number of the families would probably be vocal in their mistrust of these guys, especially if they start asking questions.

And, of course, Cheney & Co. would be asked about the air quality issue they had with the EPA. (One reason why Christie quit???)

14. Bloomberg did the right thing here
for a change.

But I think it's obvious that this was not a "security" issue. Cheney would have been booed off the stage.

16. Do you think that the convention on next year’s
anniversary will backfire? They can’t even let Chimp into the City this year because they are petrified of the victims’ families’ reactions. It is very unlikely that is going to improve over the next year. The convention could be the final blow for hypocrisy.

19. Kind of reminds me of the 70's
When Nixon was finally forced to honor John Paul Vann, by having his family to the White House. His son was insistent he was going to rip up his draft card and hand it to Nixon when he shook hands.

27. I think they're on to Cheney.
Finally. Who wants him there if they have any reason to believe that he had something to do with the way things turn out on 9/11? That would truly be a slap in the face of the families of the survivors.

And I think many of the 911 families have a few questions they would like answered.
