FCC Makes Exception To Rules So Howard Stern Can Promote Arnold Candidacy
FCC Says Shock-Jock Stern Qualifies as Newsman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Even though shock jock Howard Stern's radio and television show features scantily clad women and raunchy chatter, regulators on Tuesday ruled it a news program, exempting it from equal time rules on political coverage.

The staff decision by the Federal Communications Commission opens the way for the show to book two of the sexier candidates for California governor: Hollywood he-man Arnold Schwarzenegger and porn-star Mary Carey.

A media watchdog group immediately denounced the FCC ruling, calling it a reversal of decades of U.S. media regulation designed to promote fairness in election coverage and an informed public debate on government policy.

1. The fairness doctrine died under Bush I, IIRC.
exempting it from equal time rules on political coverage.

2. The fairness doctrine and equal time provisions are not the same thing
The Fairness doctrine had to do with providing adequate time for opposing opinions to editorializing.

The equal time provisions pertaining to elections still apply and have NOT been repealed.

8. No, it was done under Great Satan I
(aka Reagan)

The Fairness Doctrine was set aside in 1987. The Reich Wing has had its plan in place for almost 20 years, all the while screaming "Liberal Media!!!"

Kill your TV before it kills you,
:argh:

11. Fairness Doctrine lost in 1986 under Raygun
http://knightdreamers.com/HomePage/SkyWatchersRealm/essays/fairness/fairness.htm

excerpt:

In 1986, the constitutionality of the Fairness Doctrine was challenged in the appeals court. Judge Bork concluded that the doctrine was not codified and remanded the case to the FCC. The Federal Communications Commission responded by narrowing the doctrine's scope, repealing all applications except as they apply to candidates and ballot issues. In 1987, as a result of the Bork decision and the subsequent deregulation by the FCC, there were numerous calls to codify the doctrine to guarantee balanced programming and protect public interest. The 100th Congress voted to codify the doctrine with the Fairness In Broadcasting Act of 1987, but it was vetoed by President Reagan. In a letter that accompanied his veto, Reagan stated that, "History has shown that the dangers of an overly timid or biased press cannot be averted through bureaucratic regulation, but only through the freedom and competition that the First Amendment sought to guarantee".

4. What Makes You So Sure
An appearance on Stern will help Arnie? I admit, I don't listen, so have no idea where his head is at.

But I'm not about to forget the time Stern had Wayne Gretsky on and praised hockey as a sport where white guys are still safely employed, and safely in the overwhelming majority in the stands, and hit him in the head with it repeatedly, to the point where there could be no mistaking his intent.
