Study finds dangerous military waste near American Indian reservations

SPOKANE, Wash. – The last major push by the U.S. Army against American Indian tribes took place in the late 1800s. But a new report finds the military still poses a danger to American Indians.

The study contends the dramatic expansion of U.S. military bases during the 20th century was largely concentrated in the same remote, arid places in the West where tribal reservations were located.

That means Indians could be disproportionately exposed to toxic chemicals and unexploded bombs compared to non-Indians, according to the report by Gregory Hooks of Washington State University and a former graduate student, Chad Smith, now of Texas State University-San Marcos.

By the 1880s the U.S. government had managed to confine almost all of the Indians on reservations, usually on land so poor that the white man could conceive of no use for it themselves. The rations and supplies that had been guaranteed them by the treaties were of poor quality, if they arrived at all. Graft and corruption were rampant in the Indian Bureau. In an attempt to stem this problem, a move was made to recruit Quakers to take the positions as Indian agents, however not nearly enough Quakers responded to the call for volunteers. This call, however, opened the door to other denominations setting up shop on the reservations. An attempt was made to convert the Indians to Christianity with mixed results.

I guess they found another use for the land. When you start to look beyond the wealthy white male version of history the US looks pretty bad.
