Anti-Bush protesters scuffle with police
Last Updated Tue, 30 Nov 2004 19:42:03 EST

OTTAWA - As many as 5,000 protesters thronged the streets around Parliament Hill Tuesday, hundreds of them briefly scuffling with police as they demonstrated against visiting U.S. President George W. Bush.

Disorder broke out at about 3 p.m. in front of the Chateau Laurier hotel, shortly after Bush and Prime Minister Paul Martin gave a news conference at the Lester B. Pearson Building, the headquarters of Canada's Foreign Affairs department.

5. Not the fault of the Police
After the march through the city most people hung out at Parliament Hill. Some groups (led by the anarchists) decided to confront the police barricade that kept us a block away from Shrubby. They pushed the barricade over and pushed the police line back about 100 feet.

At this point the cops did what they had to and called in reinforcements to hold their new position. After a 15 minute stand-off some in the crowd started throwing shit at the police.

The police ended up lobbing some tear gas into the crowd. To their credit, they only used what they had to use to disperse the crowd. A small scuffle ensued followed by a couple of arrests.

Pics are coming soon. After a short edit.

24. "led by the anarchists"?? Where did you get that from?
And btw, it's Bushs fault. He should stay home for four years cause nobody wants him. 'cept maybe Poland. Let him visit there.

27. The "Anarchists"
Wearing all black, flying black and red flags led a large group of people to a confrontation with the police at a barricade erected to keep everyone away from the Westin Hotel. Shrub was there meeting with our leaders.

The barricade was pushed down and the small number of riot police originally there backed up. Soon reinforcements started arriving and some people (no way to know who) started throwing things at the police.

As soon as word spread that tear gas was inevitable, most of us booked out to the sidelines.

Maybe Iceburg can elaborate.

45. and later at that site -- (also more pics)
"some people (no way to know who) started throwing things at the police."

-- after that silly bit of provocation by a few silly people
ended and the crowd in that location had thinned out, someone
tossed something from a ways back in crowd, and a person with
a loudspeaker at the front of the crowd turned around and
suggested that if s/he wanted to throw things, s/he come right
up to the front and do it. It stopped.

The incident in front of the Conference Centre / Château Laurier
had nothing to do with the large protests organized by the
coalition of peace groups (including major trade unions and
other representative organizations).

These are my favourite pics from the indymedia site linked to
by iceburg:

http://ottawa.indymedia.ca/en/2004/11/174.shtml

-- this one from the march that followed the noon rally:

People you know were there. ;) The crowd of marchers extends way
behind the camera, and farther in the distance than can be seen,
and off in both directions in this one (and no, I don't know what
the guy with the Free Beer sign was up to):

-- and the candlight vigil on Parliament Hill at 5 pm:

Who knows ... if the few obnoxious self-promoting individuals at
the Conference Centre event had stayed home, the media might
just have had to show some pictures like that. Doubtful, maybe,
but it's hard to see what the individuals in question accomplished.

I have never seen a crowd so large in Ottawa, nor have I ever seen so many police in riot gear. It will cost Canadians in excess of $5,000,000 to accommodate * . It was a very well organized .. people of all ages, races and spectrums of life.

his joke was so beyond lame.

And what's up with the panting he does after he tells a joke?

Didn't anyone tell him not to laugh at his own jokes? And certainly not for several seconds?

Oh God, it was embarrassing. I'm just sitting here at my computer desk and I had to hide my face from shame.

They weren't waving with five fingers, you idiot, they only had ONE up in the air.

40. Thanks for the video link ... it illustrates that Canada was prepared
for the worst. The "scene of violence" was the only incident and I was there on the front line during the standoff. Some jacka$$ sprayed one of the policemen with red paint and a small brawl between the two ensued.

The event surpassed all my dreams ... my guess is that the crowd exceeded 50,000 and it was extremely peaceful ... people of all ages and walks of life. I have to say though I was shocked at the number of police .... look for a sale of slightly used riot gear on ebay next week, cause we sure as hell won't need it again unless * decides to pay us a visit again.

39. The creative signs are the best part!!
"Jesus W. Bush" --too funny!

Using a truck for a billboard to proclaim him a war criminal -great!

"59 million Americans can be wrong" -boy I would love for them to realize --and for us to be able to prove--that the number was really much lower, and in fact a minority of us.

I notice * is not making too many visits into our own states right now, so maybe we'll have to take our rage to him. We need to protest in DC!!!

13. You Know, If Bush Is So Great and Successful
as a candidate and politician, why the nth degree of security?

Good Presidents don't need or want such protection. Crooks like Nixon and Reagan and Bush do.

And the only exception, Kennedy, is most likely a victim of the BFEE or its affiliates.

16. great photos
note from a friend in Canada responding to my request for 'real news' on the lovely visit:

<<<<<<<<<<<Bush's visit has been ALL over the news for the past couple of days. The security in Ottawa (where he'll be today) is phenomenal. They even took down the old fashioned light standards on Parliament Hill because they're worried that protesters will climb them and throw stuff at Bush. I gather there will be loads of Canadian protesters there so they've been putting up barricades and planning to keep these folks far away from Bush. He and our Prime Minister will be in meetings today but Bush won't be addressing our Parliament because his staff is concerned about heckling. (that's been a problem in other countries according to our CBC news and Bush staffers don't want him to be ridiculed because it affects his media image) The CBC also reported that this visit will be tightly controlled ... no opportunities for "off the cuff" speeches. The Bush staff want this visit to be totally under their control ... they want it to be exactly what they want it to be.

Tomorrow Bush travels to Halifax to say thank you to the people who took in stranded American travellers on 9-11. That's the only speech he'll make to the people ... it'll be a good news thing ... it should serve to make people happy but many Canadians are asking why it took him so long to publicly recognize this Canadian contribution.

There was also a program on CBC last night about American citizens who are moving to Canada now that Bush has been re-elected. Interesting stuff.

If you keep yourself tuned to anything CBC you should get the coverage you're looking for.>>>>>>>>>>>>>

20. Hard to tell
The crowd got larger as the day progressed. I would guess between 5000 and 7500 at Confederation Park. But as we marched lots of people joined in along the way. Judging from your shots from the Hill and what I saw on Wellington in that timeframe, I'd guess 25,000.

I'm not trying to dis' you on your estimate, and I have to admit the crowd was huge (and huge fun at that).

Blew my expectations completely away!

Estimated Crowd Size: 40,000

The area on the Parliament Hill pic above (a snap of the "centre" crowd - left and right side are cut off) covers approximately 500 * 700 feet. If each person occupies 3 feet squared, then 500*700/9 = 38,888 people.

Trust me, it was nose-to-derriere most of the day... I wouldn't be surprised if the Eye Institute at the Ottawa General Hospital had a flood of eye and other related injuries to treat. "Hand me the forceps, Nurse ...I'm afraid we have another placard to extract!"
