Weekend shopping fever cools after one day
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002103325_shop29.html

NEW YORK — The start of the holiday season was respectable but unimpressive for many of the nation's retailers, with consumers jamming stores and malls Friday and pulling back as the weekend wore on.

Big chains including J.C. Penney and Sears, Roebuck were pleased with sales. But Wal-Mart Stores said its sales in the seven days that ended Friday were disappointing, and it lowered its sales forecasts for November.

"Friday overall was strong, but Saturday was weak and disappointing, so together it was only a modest two-day performance," said Michael Niemira, chief economist at International Council of Shopping Centers. "Still, I continue to believe that this is not a bellwether for how the season will end up."

2. But...ButButBut...
...But the newspapers were telling us we were shopping in record numbers!! Screaming that we better hurry and shop or miss the great deals!! Dirty liberal media!! WHY WOULD THEY LIE TO US!!

One of my local (morning edition) papers said Friday was a "record-setting" shopping day for the nation.

This article was published ON Friday. Morning.

People arrested in the night and held without legal consel; a state-run news agency; open electoral fraud. Remember when that was the ENEMY?

5. "Jesus Saves...
and so should you." That would be a good slogan for the "Starve the Beast" campaign.

6. Penney's & Dillard's did bang-up business on Friday.
I was at the mall by 9 a.m. on Friday. By 10:30 the mall was wall to wall people. The lines at Penney's registers were so long you had to factor in a 30 to 45 minute wait just to check out. Having been at the mall several hours by that time, I had to leave without buying from Penney's. I just couldn't stand up in that line for another 45 minutes.

I went back at 8 a.m. on Saturday. I checked out by 9 a.m. at Penney's. I was 2nd or 3rd in line. Much better.

I'm guessing that Penney's is going to have a heck of a retail season. They are doing excellent marketing and have some excellent deals to get people in their stores. I don't shop at Sears, so I can't say about that. I avoid Wal-Mart anyway, so I couldn't say about that store. Target did bang-up business on Friday; I went there late Friday afternoon; there weren't tons of people, but a number of items were sold out, so I figured that earlier that day, they'd been hit by a slew of people.

There are tons of deals out there, folks! Anyone looking to buy clothing, sleepwear, electronics....this season is the time to do it!

8. I'm not looking to buy anything.
I have all the corporate crap I need and I'm not going to support the people that helped put and keep Bushco in power. I'm buying a few gifts for my family but most of those will be things like CDs and DVDs by artists and actors that supported Kerry.

7. Come on!! Spread the boycott of Christmas and holiday shopping!!
It can work I tell you. And if we can make it grow throughout the year we may be able to bow the heads of the corporations who really feed the bear! A year-long cut back in discretionary spending will send a real message...bigger than voting!
