We told the truth, ex-PM Aznar tells March 11 commission of inquiry
MADRID (AFP) - Former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar insisted that his government told the truth in the aftermath of the March 11 Madrid train bombings as he gave testimony to a parliamentary inquiry.

"We told the truth -- it was others who lied and engaged in manipulation," insisted Aznar as he roundly defended his government's decision to pin the blame for the blasts, which killed 191 people and injured close on 2000, on the Basque separatist group ETA.

Spain's worst ever terrorist attack came with the country engaged in the final days of campaigning for a March 14 general election which Aznar's rightwing Popular Party (PP) had been set to win under leader Mariano Rajoy, Aznar having long before decided not to seek a third term in office.

The government's insistence that the bombings were the work of ETA, even as evidence emerged fingering Islamic extremists angered by Aznar's decision to back the US-led war in Iraq (news - web sites), culminated in a surprise Socialist Party (PSOE) victory.

1. Report: FBI Finds Link Between 9/11, Madrid Bombs
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 08:21 AM by maddezmom

MADRID (Reuters) - The FBI (news - web sites) has established the clearest link yet between the March 11 Madrid train bombings and the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, a Spanish newspaper reported Sunday.

The FBI has told Spanish investigators that one of three men believed to have planned the Sept. 11 attacks from Spain in the summer of 2001 also gave the order to carry out the Madrid blasts, the newspaper ABC reported.

The train bombings killed 191 people and wounded 1,900 three days before a general election. In videotapes, the bombers claimed the attacks in the name of al Qaeda in Europe and said they were in revenge for Spain sending troops to Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan (news - web sites).

Investigators have long concluded that the Sept. 11 attacks were partially planned in Spain in July 2001.

2. Fuck off, cabron
When did you tell the truth, when you blamed the Basques or when you blamed Al Qaeda?

3. Anzar learned how to pass the buck from Boosh
No one who aligns themselves with Boosh has told the truth since.

Blair got caught lying about mass graves in Iraq. He claimed there were 400,000 bodies in mass graves, and he was later forced to admit the number was closer to 5,000.

Howard got caught lying when he claimed asylum seekers were throwing children off of their boats.
