Thanksgiving hurts for single mom training for Iraq
Edited on Thu Nov-25-04 09:16 AM by leftchick
When did the deployments get to be TWO years?!? :(

http://www.freep.com/news/statewire/sw107745_20041125.htm

~snip~

DETROIT (AP) -- Thanksgiving brought more heartache than joy for Sgt. Ricci Moore, a single mother who is training in Wisconsin for an expected two-year stint in Iraq.

She will feel more thankful, she said, once she is deployed and her time of service starts ticking down.

"The sooner I get there, the sooner I can get home," Moore told the Detroit Free Press from Fort McCoy, Wis., 535 miles from her Detroit home and son Joey, 9, whom she left behind six weeks ago.

~snip~

Moore is one of thousands of military parents who have or will leave their children in the care of someone else while they serve their country far from home. She also is one of a smaller, but growing number of single military parents who have no other parent to leave a child with during their absence.

2. I can't imagine what our military men and women are going through
at this time. Bush is using them all as a deflecting flank manuevers -- they're taking the shelling while we're here with turkeys in our ovens and one in the White House.

What's wrong with this picture? That Americans who voted for Bush think it's okay to sacrifice our kids just to keep our cozy lifestyles unencumbered? It's a false security.

3. If she wants sympathy
she can hire a lawyer, and stand before a judge and community and state "I refuse to leave my child for 2 years to go and kill Iraqi children for an illegal war".
Yeah, she'll maybe go to jail for a few months, and have a record, but her son will have a mother, and she will keep her humanity intact.

4. As a single mother, I find the way you worded the title of your post
incredibly insensitive, even if I agree with the rest of your post.

10. and I, as a single mother
reserve my sympathy for those who are victims of fate.

"Moore, who works for the Family Independence Agency, signed up for the two-weeks-a-year, one-weekend-a-month National Guard commitment in January 2001, five years after serving full-time in the Marines. She has not complained about being sent to a full-scale war.

"I signed up for this," she said."

13. and I, as another single mother
feel for her.

Do you think we don't need people in our armed services? Do you think we could live in a country where there are not men and women willing to put themselves in harm's way for us? She did NOT choose to go to this particular war, she chose to dedicate 5 years serving as a guardian for the rest of us, and then made herself available to be called back if needed.

Let's not spit on the troops. Let's honor them and thank them for their service. It's the evil * cabal that is sending her to Iraq that deserves our anger and disgust.

5. We barely know what she'll face
A shortage of tampons and pads has made life miserable for women soldiers in Iraq. That and their seeing mangled bodies of babies and their mothers.

stories like hers.

Oh I forgot, it would be wishful thinking to believe that Right Wing minds could be changed from hearing about this. They can't relate to the problems of those who are doing their bidding - fighting this "war on terror".

I can hear some of them now: "That's too bad, but she should have gotten married again to give that child another parent...", or "What's the problem? The child's with family anyway", etc., ad nauseum.

7. I have seen too many interviiews
where they just love chimpy. The American people voted for this and apparently the military vote was for chimpy too so what is the question. People voted and NOW they are disappointed?
