Poll: 70% think Hussein, 9/11 linked
Poll: 70% think Hussein, 9/11 linked

Belief persists despite lack of evidence of any direct link

By Dana Milbank and Claudia Deane
THE WASHINGTON POST

WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 — On the second anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, seven in 10 Americans continue to believe that Iraq’s Saddam Hussein had a role in the attacks, even though the Bush administration and congressional investigators say they have no evidence of this.

SIXTY-NINE PERCENT of Americans said they thought it at least likely that Hussein was involved in the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, according to the latest Washington Post poll. That impression, which exists despite the fact that the hijackers were mostly Saudi nationals acting for al Qaeda, is broadly shared by Democrats, Republicans and independents

7. rush limbaugh, right-wing media
are encouraging this misconception. They are using the "testimony" of questionable Iraqi defectors about Salman Pak to bolster their case. Here's just one example from rush limbaugh (you can find a lot more by Googling) --

Jet Fuselage in Salman Pak, Iraq Used to Train Al-Qaeda Terrorists

March 14, 2003

For months, I've been telling you about the airliner fuselage used by Al-Qaeda terrorists to train hijackers. It's in Salman Pak, Iraq - and now we have pictures to prove it. (Click on each photo for a larger image.) Space Imaging's IKONOS Satellite - the world's first one-meter commercial satellite - collected these images on April 25, 2000.

10. They've created "Virtual Amerika" that overlays the original

When the effect was more slight, during the Raygun Years...we scarcely even grasped what was occurring. "Raygun's Teflon" was manufactured.

Now that Bush's Teflon, a high-potentcy version that is Orwellian and Grotesque, points the way back through history. Ollie North with a 96% approval rating...just what was going on there? Iran-Contra crooks benefitted from the Mighty Wurlitzer.

Such was the growing wealth inequality and power in this country that they outspent us...if you consider the $200 million Scaife money and the proabbly hundreds of million from Coors and other sources...about 5-1 overall.

Weird and scary times.

11. An example of how the media doesn't help
I just saw this same story reported on MSNBC.

They mentioned that 69% believe there's a link, but they didn't bother to report the fact that those people are ***wrong***.

They ended the story as if this were an opinion piece, on a par with x% of Americans enjoy Pepsi over Coke.

13. White House keeps saying the Iraq conquest was part of the "war on terror"
They will not make the bald face lie that Saddam bombed the WTC, but that statement is as close as they get. They should be challenged on that.

14. This is the ultimate proof that Propaganda is used in this country
I have a friend who thinks I am wrong to call CNN, MSNBC, Fox and sometimes the networks, a propaganda arm of the Bush Administration.
She says "that is a little strong language to call the media propaganda."

I have pointed to this before. When a major portion of the population holds a totally false belief and persists in holding it against all evidence to the contrary the only explanation is excellent propaganda.

Especially when that belief supports a government doing so much violence against other lands and people.

Goebbels would be so proud.

15. US multinatinal corporate media
This poll is a damning indictment of US multinatinal corporate media. They have willfully misinformed the public for too long.

Democracy presumes the existence of an informed public. When media becomes concentrated in few and homogenous hands, the situation becomes undemocratic.

Bush has been able to perpetrate this war because he had little need to worry about an informed public. According to this poll, they still had little need to worry about it.

Americans would so better if they turned off their television sets and looked to the I-net for news. If the American meainstream is not going to do its duty and properly inform the public, then Americans should seek out news sources that are foreign or anti-establishment or exist on the fringes of the establishment. Those of us who get information from the British press knew last October that the junta was cooking intelligence to fit its predetermine policy, rather than using intelligence to make a rational determination on what policy ought to be.

Why do US news outlets continue to waste time on trivial stories? Why do they continue to give intellectual legitimacy to rabid anti-intellectuals like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh? Why do they not just simply point out that there was never the slightest evidence to suggest that Saddam had any association with al-Qaida or the September 11 attacks?

They simply are not fulfilling their function in a democratic state.
