Poll question: Just Curious To See Where The DU Demographics Are, In Relationship To Anthony Weiner
Crude poll to see if age or gender have any part in people's views on whether Anthony Weiner should resign, or stay.

1. other-- I generally don't care much about sexual indescretions between consenting adults...
...regardless of political party or other affiliations. AND regardless of how yucky I personally feel about their particular behavior, e.g. David Vitter. Whatever floats yer boat.

Get the fuck off the stage already Weiner, you are distracting the Dems from far more compelling issues (like the Wisconsin recall). Too bad we lost a fighter, but that's what willfully lying to your constituents does.

And I agree, drinking a beer (or any cold beverage) beats reading this crap!

Lets get back to real stuff that matters!

him to stay. If he's forced to resign seems as though there will be a lot of pissed off dems in NY and elsewhere.

I get the feeling you'll be happy about losing a fighter and pissing people off. :toast:

Edited on Sat Jun-11-11 09:37 PM by RiverStone
Picture a 9th grader asking in US Government why a liar (not just once, but repeatedly) is allowed to stay in office? I for one am not OK lowing the bar so much that we condone it. He fucked with the public trust, I give not a shit about his sexual impulses. It's the lying.

No I'm not happy about losing a fighter, and while you enjoy using a broad brush (like the pukes) to assume anyone that disagrees with you is a Breitbart enabler, I simply believe in natural consequences.

How would you answer a student that asks: Why is someone that repeatedly lied allowed to keep his job as an elected representative?

18. We didn't "lose" a fighter. He chose to do this to himself.
He lied and hung out to dry everyone who initially believed him and defended him. The longer he hangs around the longer he makes himself and his lying and other behavior the talking points for Republicans. He is an arrogant liar who needs to resign, which I'm sure will happen this next week.

28. I have a question that might help you tip one way or the other.
Many of us on the left have regularly said that the personal sex lives of politicians is "none of our business", and only between that person, and the people directly involved.

My view is that those of us who said that (like me) can't get upset about some one lying about a behavior I said I don't care about.

And if that's true, even if they go on TV and lie, they aren't lying to me, after all, I've told them "I don't care one way or the other".

When they lie on TV about this, they are really lying to their spouse.

Now I do have one idea ... if we decide that lying about sex matters .... reporters should now ask every member of congress if they have EVER had an affair. The congress person has to tell us the absolute truth.

And if they don't tell the truth, and we learn they lied ... they need to resign. Probably be lots of empty seats in the next Congress.

65. Sorry, we get to decide what is or isn't our business.
So first we must wonder and regularly ask "what are they hiding?"

And second, we find out they did something like this, out they go for their lie of omission.

The reality is that we can't claim to not care about the behavior and then be angry when they lie about the behavior we claimed to not care about.

Either we care or we don't.

So if we care, then they need to be honest with us about this behavior, or we can't trust them.

That's probably true (that those most like him are the most likely to be more judgmental) but the real question here isn't one of morality - it is one of politics.

To hell with what Weiner did, I have no problem with it. The morality question is between he and his wife. The question is of his political liability. Is he too much dead weight to carry from here. Personally, I don't think so. The media will eventually get tired of it.

48. Other - the real story is that Breitbart is now a "journalist"
Breitbart is nothing more than a republican hitman. When the corporations and the their bootlickers in the republican party want to get rid of someone or something, they call in the likes of Breitbart, and he fixes it for them. Now he's respectable in the eyes of the media. Now there can be no doubt that the media thinks that slandering and ruining people who are in the way of the republican party is appropriate. What happened to Weiner is unimportant in comparison. If Weiner hadn't done waht he did, it wouldn't matter - except that in doing what he did, Breitbart became an upstanding member of the media. Now any politician who is successfully in the way of the republicans can be treated the same way as Weiner whether he/she did anything or not, and the media will act to destroy him/her through Breitbart with legitimacy.

I find what he's accused of to be pretty damn minor and irrelevant, and this whole feeding frenzy is way more bizarre and freaky to me than anything he did. Whether he stays or goes is up to him, his wife, and his constituents, and I'm none of the above, so my opinion really shouldn't count for all that much. (But, for what it's worth, I think the good he's done as a fighting Dem congressman far FAR outweighs this sordid little non-issue.)

I'm an 18 year old female, and while I don't care about what he did and it does nothing to change my opinion of him as an immensely important politician... He does really pose a problem for the Democrats. I think he should step down, look for his remaining shreds of dignity that he's tossed about, and then reemerge after a bit of time has passed. He's behaved like Kanye West, it's reflected poorly on the party and he's given Andrew Breitbart credibility. There is reason to be seriously angry with him.

68. 45+ female - he should stay.
I have never believed any relationship of a sexual nature between consenting adults is any of my damn business. I signed on to MoveOn back in the day when it was about the Clinton impeachment attempt, and have felt that way ever since. The only time I take issue is when someone rails in public about behavior and then participates in that very behavior in private (I'm talking about you, Elliot and Larry).

Let the House investigate and censure him if neccesary, and then let his distrcit decide his fate the next election.

70. 49 year-old female here
And I think he should stay - it should be up to his voting constituents to decide whether or not he is up to the task of representing them, since he hasn't broken any laws that I know of at this point that have anything to do with serving in congress.

I might not like what he has done in his personal life, but there have been many members of congress that have done much worse (either personally and/or professionally) and are still around.

My hope is that the end result of this will be a better Anthony Weiner - one who will be a bit less narcissistic, more humble, and able to work as a strong, opinionated liberal voice within a strong team of Democratic congress members.

Too much to hope for? Maybe.

Angel
