Abortion rate drops 11% under pro-choice Democratic governor

The 25,512 abortions in Michigan in 2004 were the lowest total since 1999. They represent a drop of more than 3,000, or 11 percent, from the 2003 total of 28,584.

"I think it is good news," said Kathy Humphrey, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Centers of West Michigan.

<snip>

Humphrey views the decline as the likely result of programs her agency supports aimed at preventing unwanted pregnancies. Those include comprehensive sex education and the distribution of contraceptives such as condoms and birth control pills.

"People are increasingly understanding that unintended pregnancy is a serious health issue and that it is related to abortion," Humphrey said.

2. Well duh...i f only the sadly-misnamded "prolifers" would get a clue
about REALLY preventing unwanted pregnancies, but then, that is NOT their goal. Their goalis to FORCE unwanted pregnancies in order to subjugate women and put themn back inthe kitchen and shut them up.
Fucking lying sack of shit hypocrites.

5. This is good news for both pro-choicers and pro=lifers

Whichever side one comes down on, an eleven percent decline in abortions is (I think) a great thing. But I think the credit for the decline belongs more to Planned Parenthood than to our largely-useless state government, which has plenty of right-wing, "pro-life" Republican crispies in both houses of the legislature.
John
I don't see where Jennifer Granholm being governor has much to do with it, either.

6. Granholm wouldn't get any credit for it anyway
The Republicans are just going to say that the anti-abortion policies of the Bush Admin caused the drop.

Granholm does have something to do with it though. She does a lot of promoting of staying healthy and safe which also helps to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
