White Male Republican Iraq Marine Veteran votiing for Obama - and a Kick Ass Obama Animation I made!
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 08:22 AM by deadlyaj
Obama has my vote!

This war needs to end.

It will be the first time Ive voted for a Democrat.

I had over 400 fellow Marines along with their family in Mississippi help get out the vote for Obama.

Along with almost 600 in Penn. so far and more im sure in the next coming weeks!

Did a neat animation also tell me what ya think!

OBAMA 08!

1. Retired colonel voting for Obama!
I was also pleased to hear that my cousin a retired army colonel is voting for Obama! He voted for Reagan, Bush 1 but not Bush 2 the second time and he said until the GOP gets their act together he's not voting GOP again! He opposed the Iraq war.

27. Where does it say that?
Wow, I have to say I've tried to stay out of the GD: P wars as much as possible, but this really disturbs me. Are you that anti-Obama that you can't accept a post from someone which does nothing but support his candidate. Did he slam Clinton in any way?

Rules:

Who We Are: Democratic Underground is an online community for Democrats and other progressives. Members are expected to be generally supportive of progressive ideals, and to support Democratic candidates for political office. Democratic Underground is not affiliated with the Democratic Party, and comments posted here are not representative of the Democratic Party or its candidates.
3. Civility: Treat other members with respect. Do not post personal attacks against other members of this discussion forum.

I see "for Democrats and other progressives." This poster is supporting a "Democratic candidate" and "progressive ideals." I don't see it written anywhere that Republicans and Independents can't post on DU as long as they follow the rules.

The rules also say the following:

Constructive criticism of Democrats or the Democratic Party is permitted.

Please tell me how constructive the criticism of the candidates has been in GD: P

You are not permitted to use this message board to work for the defeat of the Democratic Party nominee for any political office. If you wish to work for the defeat of any Democratic candidate in any General Election, then you are welcome to use someone else's bandwidth on some other website.

Do not post broad-brush smears against Democrats or the Democratic Party.

There have been endless rule violations in GD: P -- this person posting isn't one of them IMO.

44. How do you know that?
I personally knew one very "progressive" Republican -- my father. He did later in life switch to the Democratic Party for a couple of reasons. I guarantee, he was as "progressive" as anyone on this board and that was when he was a Republican.

Pigeonholing people doesn't help us IMO -- I accept people for what they say and who they are first. If they prove differently over time then I have to reassess. I don't judge someone just because they say they're Republican.....or Democrat. Believe me, my representative is a blue dog Dem -- I know a couple of Republicans who are way more progressive than he is. Why do they stay in the Republican Party? I don't know, but Republicans they are.

48. Really? Jim Jeffords was a progressive while he was still
a repub. In fact, he was more progressive than hilly on many issues. Lincoln Chafee was more progressive than hilly when he was a repub. Of course repubs can be progressives- though it's becoming more difficult. You're just bitter and sore. And you don't run DU. If you don't like the OP posting here, alert. It won't get you anything but what the hell.

He still IDs as a Republican. There are plenty of bipartisan boards out there, and I don't want this to become one of them.

My father is a Republican Hillary supporter. I wouldn't want him posting on here either, because he is STILL a Republican.

94. seems like most visitors won't BECOME Democrats
with people like you having such a piss poor attitude towards them. if they are willing to vote for any Democrat, they might be willing to become pro-choice, or for gay marriage, or for universal health care or for any number of progressive policies that they currently disagree with.

this is why you don't like Obama isn't it? he is welcoming to Republicans and others he disagrees with. oddly enough, it's one of the reasons I support him.

let's add members to our party, even if they aren't in 100% lockstep with the progressive movement. seems like a good way to win elections.

115. No, however
"socially liberal" can be interpreted to mean not only liberal social policies, but also liberal social programs such as aid for the poor, universal health care, financing for higher education, etc. Obviously these things cost money which must be raised through taxes--which a "fiscally conservative" person would rather not pay (smaller government and all that). So in a sense the two concepts are very much at odds.

118. No it's not.
I'm too poor not to be fiscally conservative, and I'd prefer if the Republican Party would start being a lot more fiscally conservative than they have been for the last 7 years. How much universal health care would the cost of the illegal occupation of Iraq have paid for?

Obama Introduces Bill To Prevent Veterans Homelessness
Friday, November 9, 2007

Act would launch pilot program to expand veterans housing, supportive services

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) yesterday introduced the Veterans Homelessness Prevention Act, which would launch an innovate pilot program to pair housing for at-risk veterans and veteran families with supportive services in an effort to prevent veterans from falling into homelessness.

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, over the course of 2006, there were approximately 336,627 homeless veterans. Although it may take years for veterans to fall into homelessness, hundreds of veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have already found themselves in this situation and, based on reported VA estimates, 1,500 seemed at high risk of becoming homeless. This bill will create housing targeted at veteran families and pair the housing with needed critical services such as mental health counseling, financial planning, and employment training. This bill is co-sponsored by Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ). Congressmen Al Green (D-TX) plans to introduce companion legislation in the House of Representatives next week.

“Our veterans served this country with honor, and we must not turn our backs on them when they return home,” Senator Obama said. “It’s simply unacceptable that these heroes put their lives on the line for our country and come home to find themselves without jobs, without affordable housing, and lacking the services we owe their sacrifice. In our great nation we must do more for our veterans, and this bill will go a long way in meeting our commitment to these veterans. I thank my colleagues in the Senate and the House for supporting this legislation, as well as our many outside partners committed to this issue. We’ll fight to get this passed quickly.”

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, veterans only comprise 11 percent of the adult population but 26 percent of the homeless population. While one of the primary causes for homelessness in this country is the result of a lack of affordable housing, many returning veterans face other significant risk factors, including high unemployment rates and psychological injuries. Evidence shows that not treating these less visible wounds of war can result in homelessness.

And what is your position on other issues integral to the democratic platform, such as reproductive choice? Are you a supporter of gay rights, universal health care, immigration reform, etc? I ask because I'd like to know more about why you consider yourself a Republican and if you will be supporting other Democratic candidates and issues.

71. ...
Im for very small govt. very limited social entitlements and deficit spending on our military... which is considered fiscally conservative usually.

The Heritage fun and the Cato Institute are great examples of groups pushing fiscal conservatism.

Very interesting model to use.

Could you explain what you mean by "very limited social entitlements"? Sorry to be the only one asking questions here but appreciate your answers.

75. In other words, you are a LIBERAL REPUBLICAN
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 10:22 AM by Romulox
You can vote (and post) anywhere you like as far as I'm concerned.

But it is dangerous for the Democratic party to become the home away from home for liberal Republicans; the so-called "third way" (socially liberal, fiscally conservative ) is moving this party farther and farther to the right. :eyes:

83. Abortion View
I am pro-life personally but I dont believe its a political matter that really deserves a large amount of attention.

Honestly, I dont believe its something men should be even allowed to a stand about.

I support the current courts decision on Roe V Wade because honestly we have more important matters to deal with other than abortion.

Im a core pro lifer - I dont believe in the death penalty either.

being! And woman aren't equal unless they can make the decisons over their own bodies without intereference. And if you don't think men should have a stand about this , why do you have one? And whay gives you the right to designate human rights an unimportant?

How did you reconcile joining a military service, where you knew part and parcel of the core mission of the military is delivering death to others?

Firstly, great post and awesome work! I feel Barack's biggest appeal is being able to bring in folks with your background - being in the Marine Corp/OIF experience and a Republican to boot. In other words I think you bring an objective viewpoint and its great for us Obama partisans to see you in his campaign. I can't imagine Hillary getting those type of votes, at least in terms of enthusiastically supporting her.

Barack's biggest contrast with John is the Iraq ordeal and I hope it will be a strength in the fall contest. I don't agree with BO on all of his platforms, and I'm sure you don't either, but it just boils down to who's the best candidate among the three.
