I think that people are becoming more aware. The real-time poll for Dodd might be closer to "Are you aware of Dodd's position and activities?".

I think he's making great progress....

117. That's right.
The one struggling in 3rd in Iowa in 2004 ended
up on top. It can happen again for Edwards now
as it did for Kerry then. As the shine of Dean
faded as he seemed less electable which gains
priority as we get closer to the election. It
will be the same for Edwards who is found in
survey after survey more electable than HK.
DK as VP will ensure that those who think
Edwards won't be left enough will have a
chance of gaining their votes as well...

17. Why is Richardson always polling so low?
He even was nominated four times for the Nobel Peace price:

http://www.richardsonforpresident.com/about_bill?id=0007

"In recognition of his efforts around the world, Bill has been nominated four times for the Nobel Peace Prize. Each nomination has focused on his international peace mediation, hostage rescue and his commitment to justice. One of the nominating letters put it best: "Bill Richardson has shown his fight in the struggle of humanity by shining the beam of reason into those corners of the world darkened by nuclear peril for far too long, helping to ensure that we can live in a world where arms hold us together -- they don't keep us apart."

120. I Agree
Edited on Sat Oct-27-07 01:39 PM by Mark D.
Learning of his resume' years ago, before he became
a national figure, Richardson was impressive but he
delivers his message like a drunk mailman and there
is a kind of confusion about him at times that the
more saavy Rudy Gulliani (the likely GOP nominee)
would pounce on. Kucinich would clean up Rudy.
Gore / Edwards would also probably best him...
Not that it matters. Kerry whipped Bush in all
debates, and even won the election (but 'lost'
due to the GOP election tactics and electronic
voter fraud) and still didn't get to be president.

169. Kerry won all the debates
The media chose to ignore the truth, as usual. When bush stutters/stammers, speaks in foreign tongues, and yet gets praise from the media you know for sure Kerry has lost the election.

We have already been told who will be nominated from each party. They act like Rudy, Thompson and Mitt have something worth while to offer the country??? And hack on Hillary, ever so carefully, since they want her to be the candidate (in my opinion).

Rudy should be the easiest to prove he is a fake. Old newspaper clippings should do it.

Biden supporter here.

33. I think some people are afraid that their candidate wont get the...
results that want to see. I love it when I see polls like this with only candidates that are running and not any hopefuls or others that people would like to run. I wish there was a way that you could put a poll on the front page and it would stay for awhile so we could get an idea of how DUers are voting as of today. I don't put much stock in the national polls because I'm not sure who they are polling, how they are asking the questions, in what orders the candidates names are given or if all the candidates are even in the poll. I would love to have a poll where all DUers took part so we could see how a poll would look when taken by people that educate themselves on the candidates and politics instead of the average joe that answers there phone, knows nothing about the candidates and just gives an answer reflecting what names he has seen on television, so he can get on with his day. I hope you can get something going with it!

get at least 1,000 votes?

It would be much more interesting, regardless of whom one supports.

Keep this kicked, there aren't even 200 votes-yet almost 800 views.

It doesn't matter who starts a poll of this type-there should be at least a 1,000 DUers participating.

72. Like I said
100 votes or 300 votes, the percentages don't change.

I wonder what the minimum number is before we have an accurate sample. It seems somewhat less then 100. I voted last night when their was 98 votes, and the percentage of votes per candidate hasn't changed, except that Gravel picked up 3 votes when before he had none.

BTW, what happened to Kucinich people? Did they realize after that Colbert appearance that DK is actually a joke? He sure seemed to consider himself and his candidacy a joke that night. A chance to reach a large constituency and he spends it making stupid jokes. He was even less impressive than he was in 04 when he went on the Daily Show and talked only of one issue - his own ability to run the Iraq war better than Bush.

109. I think Dennis did great on the Colbert show.
He showed all who watched what a great sense of humor he has. Maybe you haven't noticed, but image and personality today are -sadly- considered more important than issues. Now, Dennis was always the guy with the best stance on all the issues, but his image wasn't very good, because he was portrayed as this boring, weird-looking guy. Now, he has convinced a lot of people he has a very humorous side, too. And I've seen people write (on YouTube) that they had no idea about Kucinich and what he stands for before he went onto Colbert's show, but now they are going to do research on his stances on the issues.

So I think it showed he takes his run for presidency very serious.

171. Yep, superficial....Edwards record in the Senate is dismal, his
votes reflect a very flawed judgment process. Yet, while supporting JE, many people here on DU go after Repubs for holding many of the same positions that JE had voted for. But, because JE now SAYS that he is sorry for his many disastrous votes in the Senate, way too many DUers choose to believe in his rhetoric. When I see the poll and all the people buying the candidate solely based on his sales pitch...because that all that he has to show for what he might do if he were elected POTUS...it is downright depressing. So, sorry if I won't be one of the cheer leading followers of JE. I look for substance and after the disastrous last 7 years, I would HOPE that Dems would be a little bit more discriminating when analyzing another POTUS candidate. Instead I see a bunch of people choosing somebody with NO CREDENTIALS and NO PROOF that he is capable of actually DOING the job.

This forum isn't just for the "yes" people and/or the cheerleaders...it is also for opposing opinions, criticism and debate, deal with it.

101. I would agree about the percentage, at least for Democrats who stay...
..relatively informed. But many Democrats aren't as well-informed as we are. As the late Anne Richards would say, the less well-informed "have their heart in the right place".

BTW, no wonder the same names keep popping up when it comes to the Hillary threads which often insult so many DU-ers for not "being on the bandwagon". It's not that Hillary supporters are particularly aggressive or mean-spirited, it simply seems a few mean-spirited, aggressive posters have made a habit of posting frequently.

124. Why?
Edited on Sat Oct-27-07 01:50 PM by Mark D.
People are confused why Hillary is polling so 'unlikeable' and yet leads polls.
It's really simple. And if anything, it will help her against the GOP if she was
nominated. I'll support her then if she is, as even a too GOP Democrat is far
better than a true GOP. But I still support a REAL democrat in Kucinich/Gore.

But I digress. Why is Hillary leading polls yet so unpopular as a person? It is
simple. Folks remember one thing. Life was better when Bill was in office. I'd
say in all possible ways except controversy/attention over bullshit vs. what's
a vast ignorance of much greater problems now found in Whitehouse vermin.

Folks simply don't like Hillary most of the time. But will vote for her knowing
Bill Clinton will live in the Whitehouse another 4 or 8 years becuase of that.
They know he won't just watch TV, & bake cookies. He will likely be nearly
as involved on every big issue she has to deal with, and she'll be fine with
that. Like it or not, dis their marriage or not, they know how to work as a
team. They know their plans worked in the 90s and could work again now.

That said. I'm just stating reasonings for others. I still would rather see
Dennis Kucinich or at least Al Gore or Edwards. But I'm not the masses.
I'm just trying to figure out why they can hate but want to elect Hillary.
I am sure I'm not the only one who's thought of this. Anyone else also??

216. Welcome to DU and I believe what you say is true. Things were
better under Clinton. Although I am not sure how many people realize that some of what we are seeing today, loss of jobs to overseas countries and the number of people coming across the southern border, are because of legislation passed while Clinton was in office. The media does a poor job of conveying this fact.

Albeit, I'm not in the sticks, but still, it's promising to hear so many people be open to accepting war in Iraq was a horribly misguided rouge to a 9/11 response, that people can be with whomever they wish, and that we shouldn't judge each other for our beliefs, oh - and gas is causing everything to be outrageous.

134. Every straw poll has had DK at the top
I listen and rate almost every major Liberal Talk Show.

Over the last two months, almost every major Liberal Talk Show Host (all around America) has carried out these straw polls.

Without any doubt, whether it be Thom Hartman, Ray Taliaferro, Mike Malloy or anyone else, DK has left every other candidate standing way way behind.

This straw poll only confirms what the public think.

But the Democrat Party nomination process does not appear to consider the public but the image creation power of a candidate based on the money / power political game being played - and in that it is obvious only those who play by the rules of the Corporate Lobbyists will feature at the top.

The only objection I keep hearing from DK's opponents is that he is not electable - but if you vote for DK, HE IS ELECTABLE!!!!

I only hope that finally you can overcome this rather negative thinking and nominate a candidate that will make the world trust in your country once again!

139. And why hasn't DU, with thousands and thousands of members, had even one little DU poll of at least
a thousand?

It's certainly time for that accomplishment here, regardless of what candidate one supports or how this latest DU poll of all announced Democratic candidates turns out.

142. The number of views really doesn't mean anything. I've clicked on this thread at least a dozen times
to see how the poll numbers are shaping up. Every time I click, I raise the "view" count by 1 more. 3,300 views are not *unique* views, they're views like mine, checking out the poll results or whatever. I could only vote once (which I did last night), but I can click on this thread an unlimited number of times, and each click will be counted as a "view".

That being said, I'm happy to help keep this kicked up. :D

145. It's very easy for any one particular thread to not be seen by lots of posters here.
In fact, most topics that get widespread attention here are the ones about which multiple threads get posted.

I do agree with you, though, it does seem like it shouldn't be THAT hard to get 1,000 votes.

I'll just keep doing what I can to keep this, and your post in GD about this poll, kicked up. I support your goal of reaching 1,000 votes!

183. It's fascinating. I've been watching this poll all day and the percentages have basically remained
unchanged.

Obama went from 9% to 10% early in the day, where he has remained since.

Kucinich went from 35% to 36%, also early in the day, and has also held steady since.

Clinton has stayed at 10%, and Edwards dropped from 31% to 30%.

I really do hope this poll reaches the 1,000 vote mark, but I suspect that the percentages will most likely not vary much from where they are now.

And while I realize that DU is most certainly NOT an accurate reflection of the Democratic-voting population at large, it's certainly interesting to see where the numbers fall within OUR community.

185. I'm really intrigued at the Obama and Clinton battle for third place-very interesting.
Biden and Dodd compare very favorably to Clinton and Obama with the larger vote here too.

There's always been a lot of polarization here, I hope this larger poll breaks some of that down and that future polls routinely draw at least the type of response we're seeing for the first time.

We only need a few hundred more DU votes now, keep this kicked.

186. I really appreciate that you set a specific goal (1,000 voters) for this poll.
I think it makes it considerably more valuable than alot of the flash-in-the-pan polls that disappear after half a day.

I doubt, however, that this will have much effect on polarization here. But at least it gives a really clear and inargueable picture of where the DU "mainstream" is at.

it is my perception that he doesn't have as many vigorous advocates as the other candidates do. There are lots of threads from known Hillary, Edwards, and Obama supporters, and even Biden's supporters are starting to get into the act. Kucinich? Not so much.

210. Support for Kucinich shows up in thread after thread where specific issues are being discussed.
Kucinich threads are started whenever he makes a speech or puts out a new press release. There's no lack of Kucinich presence on DU -- in GD for sure, maybe not so much in GD-P; my impression is that most Kucinich supporters hang out in the GD and Editorials forums.

My point is that the Clinton and Obama supporters are pushing against the grain in DU -- just take a look at the poll numbers in the OP. They are constantly trying to convince a largely skeptical audience that they are right and the skeptics are wrong. I think that's why their posts stick out, sort of like running a comb through your hair and coming up against a blob of gum.

DK in the Wisconsin primary, and Kerry/Edwards in the general election.

I think that people are voting how they really feel in this poll, and damn, it may not mean anything in the real world but it signals some kind of a shift here.

We should be able to DU polls of at least 1,000 votes on issues too-considering all the energy wasted on trivial crap here.

Funny how we keep hearing about how Hillary's got it locked up, and that Kucinich doesn't stand a chance. DU theoretically represents a wide range of Democratic tastes, and Kucinich is leading by a wide margin.

Now would be the cue for one of you DLCer types to talk about how unscientific and meaningless this poll is, so people don't get the wrong idea and realize they can vote for the person they REALLY want, not the person you TELL them to want.

I voted, but I'm going to state who I voted for because even at this stage of the game, I remain firmly undecided-- nor have I even ruled anyone out yet.

Anyways-- it seems that once one begins to back a candidate, many posters use that to judge in-totality who you are as a person, whether for good or for ill.

But I did vote, and so far the results are not as I would have expected...

Most polls don't stay visible long enough to get more than 300-400 votes. This is a new effort to get a bigger than usual sample. I think it's very interesting.

Thanks for posting!

297. Interesting results
The sample size is what is unique. What is interesting is the strong showing by Kucinich and Edwards and the lackluster showing by Obama and HRC. If we assume that DU is mainly hard core party activists than the vast majority are left wing and prefer a "peoples" candidate.

What I find even more interesting, is that HRC supporters are by far the most vocal and prolific of posters. The sheer number of pro HRC and pro Obama posts give the illusion of their being the run away favorites. It may be that these two candidates simply have a formal organizational presence on DU to pimp their candidates.

I don't think HRC or Obama is going to be able to secure the nomination.

298. More than just interesting!
I was watching this poll right from the beginning and the 35-36% for Dennis was carried almost all the way through the poll.

One would have thought that after the last debate there would be jumps for Edwards and Obama, but that did not happen and DK held fast to his 36%.

With over 100000 DUers, if they vote as they really believe who is the best candidate, it is clear that DK is the candidate of choice of DUers, although not of the media and corporate controllers of the media.

With a DUer base of 36000 for DK, which is what this translates to, there is no doubt that DK would win the election if it is free and fair, as being Democrats, it would become incumbent of all DUers to support DK!

But then, which American election has been free and fair?

My memory may be short and maybe someone could educate me on this! :sarcasm:

300. Compare this to the ongoing DFA poll which incldes Gore as a write-in
DK leads that by about 3% over Gore.

We need to have consistent DU polls that record more than a thousand DU votes-this should be easy.
Not just DU polls of all candidates, but on issues too.

It would be nice to see 5,000 DU vote polls regularly. That's a small percentage of our claimed membership. Interesting and very possible-it's up to DU.
