I appear to be a bit behind on this, but had seen no other posts in the Massachusetts forum, so perhaps I am not alone.

Today at a peace meeting I learned that Phil Dunklebarger of Westwood has announced his candidacy to run against DINO, war-supporting and general blight on the Massachusetts Congressional delegation, Rep. Steven Lynch.

It looks like some of Massachusetts' Congressmen are going to be challenged for reelection next year. The Globe reported today that former Beverly City Councillor, Phil Dunklebarger, now of Westwood, plans on challenging Congressman Stephen Lynch in the Democratic primary. Dunklebarger was a Dean supporter in 2003, and according to the Globe, has criticized Congressman Lynch for supporting the Iraq war.

A Westwood Democrat has announced he will run against US Representative Stephen F. Lynch in 2006. Phil Dunkelbarger, 57, owns and operates North American ImEx Inc., a seafood trading and export company. Dunkelbarger, in a letter to Lynch, criticized him for supporting the Iraq war and called him a career politician. Lynch, elected in 2001 to replace the late John Joseph Moakley, said, ''I consider it an honor to represent the families of the Ninth Congressional District at such an important time in our nation's history. I am hopeful that the people . . . continue to entrust me with the opportunity to serve our state, and our nation, in the years to come."

...so to all who have been saying "Lynch must go" and "we need to run a candidate against Lynch", take a look at Dunklebarger.

Your thoughts? Is Phil viable? Is he worth our support?

in to really honor the seat of John Joseph Moakley..wasn't he a well respected Congressman for many years from the 9th District in Mass?

I read a story on DU the other week that noted when Howard Dean was at a fundraiser and met John Hall ..he asked if he were The John Hall and then proceeded to ask for his autograph..

"No single act of this government in the past five years has been more destructive to our children's future than the War in Iraq. For many there will be no future, others will face the future physically and/or emotionally impaired. And all our children will pay for this war for the rest of their lives."

Setting a disengagement plan is the best way to 'support our troops' and 'stop the bleeding' from this disastrous blunder.

As the Congress began debate on the Iraq War Resolution, a few dozen of us met in the Incumbent's Boston office to try and persuade him not to support the Administration. By his own admission, constituents contacting his office were 8-1 against supporting the Republican agenda. But, saying he was exercising leadership, he voted for the Resolution and signed on to the Republican Doctrine of Pre-emptive Warfare. Instead of listening to Kennedy and Byrd, our Republican Wannabe incumbent preferred to listen to Bush and Wolfowitz.

Now, nearly 30 months, thousands of casualties, and billions of dollars later, the incumbent is still supporting this failed policy, still voting more funding, still encouraging the recruitment of more troops to feed this illegitimate conflict. There is no more important reason to replace him. When all the slick Republic spin is blown away, when all the fear mongering is brushed aside, there is, at the bottom of this sad affair, nothing but a pack of lies. Stephan Lynch should have known better.

The fact is, our departure from Iraq will have a positive effect by undercutting the appeal of the insurgency, by fully investing the Iraqis in the solution to their own problems, and by encouraging broad and meaningful international involvement to achieve a just and lasting resolution to this post-colonial mess.

The incumbent must be held accountable for the poor judgment in believing known liars and for the breach of faith in ignoring the will of his constituents.

8. Why I hate Lynch

He sided with the Republicans in the Teri Schiavo case and he's in favor of the flag desecration amendment. Both positions show an inexcusable disregard for The Constitution.

9. I have personally met Phil; he sometimes attends the local DFA

meetings that I attend

He is very smart and committed to stopping/changing the direction the country seems to be going

He believes in holding those in power accountable

He is planning on taking this challenge to Lynch straight into South Boston - if anyone on this board knows anyone in Southie who would be willing to hold a meet and greet please go to Phil's website to let him know

He'll speak to any size group just let him get a foot in the door!

10. I really like his positions...Health care is right on target:

"The case used to be made that our system of private health care delivered the highest quality in the world and that, to socialize it, would result in "long lines and poor quality care." Maybe that position could be defended a decade ago, but today, socialized systems in many other countries are delivering a higher level of care, more efficiently, to all their citizens. We need a single pay, universal health care system, and we need it now."

One dimension of the health care debate which is often overlooked is that universal health care would be manifestly good for business. It was recently reported that the U.S. lost the investment and jobs of a major auto assembly plant to Canada, because Canada has such a system and we do not. The focus of much, if not most, of all major labor/management negotiations, concerns who will pay for the skyrocketing cost of health care. Companies seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection consistently cite the inability to pay their employee health care obligations as a major cause of their insolvency. Therefore, it's not our corporations and their stockholders who want to maintain the current system.

There are nearly 50 million persons in this country without health care coverage. When they are afflicted, one way or the other, everyone else pays for their care. And everyone with some sort of coverage, is paying dearly for it. It is the fastest growing account in most family budgets. Therefore, it's not the people needing and paying for the care who want to maintain the current system.

Health care professionals consistently complain about the inefficiency and cost. Therefore they are not the ones who want to maintain the current system.

So who is it who wants to keep the current system of inflated cost and deflated service? The only ones left are the insurance companies who profit from it, and the politicians who profit from the insurance companies. Breaking this corrupt alliance has to be a top priority in the very next Congress.

I am in Capuano's district and he voted against the war. I think that he is safe, so I might just do some work for a real progressive. Thanks for the heads up. K&R

The last thing we need in Massachusetts is another white, male (millionaire?) to represent us in the US House (or Senate). We do not have a single woman or person of color representing us on the federal level. This is SHAMEFUL!

If women and minorities aren't willing to run we are just supposed to accept that DINO out of South Boston?

And give up the opportunity to vote for someone like Phil who articulates progressive values simply because he is a man and maybe a millionaire?

Sorry, I'll vote for a progressive anyday without looking at their gender or the size of their wallet
