Store owner shoots to protect life, livelihood again
NEWPORT NEWS – The red exterior is unassuming, rather plain, but for David White, the neighborhood store on Chestnut Avenue is the way the 62-year-old has supported his family for decades. When two people tried to rob him and a worker Friday night, White protected himself, the employee, and his business.

As one of the people pointed a shotgun at them, Newport News officers say Barry Hooker started to move behind the counter. White pulled a gun and shot Hooker, putting him in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital.

In February, White found himself in a similar situation. Police tell us a teenager with a gun entered the grocery store with the intention of robbing it. He got into a struggle with a customer or worker, and his gun fired, putting a bullet in the ceiling. White pulled out his own gun, and hit the 16-year-old in his backside.

“He has to do what he has to do,” Antoine Dixon, Sr. tells 13News. “The man work hard for what he has.”

Dixon says it’s unfortunate that the East End constantly is associated with things such as robberies and shootings. Along with those negatives come positives: people who make sure children get off school busses safely, neighbors watching to make sure senior citizens aren’t harassed as they walk through the community.

1. I would have done the same thing. Anyone stupid enough to
attempt a robbery with a gun is open to being shot. I don't believe in shooting people for unarmed invasion of anywhere, but pick up a gun to do it, it's survival.

2. Frontier justice is and was required in this situation.
Shoot to kill or be killed. The CHOICE is easy. I'm sick of these two bit criminal bastards!

5. There is nothing 'frontier' about it.
A 'frontier' is hardly the only place you might have to engage in self-defense. Urban areas, much more common.

6. 'frontier' is not a place; 'frontier' is a type of justice.
Quite simply, shoot the scumbag bastard without hesitation first, then if necessary, ask questions later.

7. But it implies a stereotype that is both untrue and perpetuates..
the myth that in our current state of 'civilization' we don't need to, and shouldn't want to, own guns for self-protection; that is why we have police forces everywhere...

8. Notice that the dirtbag reporter refers to it as "vigilante justice"?

9. Leave Reporter.....
Let's leave the reporter alone in a violent neighborhood with a gun and see how that dolt comes out of it.

10. Self defense isn't a justice/injustice sort of thing
it's merely self-defense.

This guy didn't go out looking for criminals to kill. He defended himself. I wish reporters were less ignorant on this subject. But it seems to be a willful thing.
