2. Recommend that everyone catch this at 7PM -- Buchanan is NUTS
(As if we didn't know it before!) Watch ol' Pat show his '50s Cold War Nixon roots AGAIN, at long last turning into the caricature he's always aspired to being.

8. Yes, she was great... the Bush administration has no limits
I thought there were two important points out of the whole hour. One is that there are divisions in the Pentagon about this type of thing (and others, witness Pace contradicting Rumsfeld about physical abuse at the press conf the other day) and it isn't only planting "good" stories that are true in the Iraqi media but also lies. As Amy said, you have these stories travel, being quotes and used authoritatively and they're bullshit.

Plus, again, as Matthews said that I agree with, Bush is spreading democracy, by his own words, but what type of democracy is it when it's based on lies and propaganda? And how can the Iraqis trust anything the United States says when they know they are targets, even though supposedly a "sovereign" country of propaganda efforts wihle the US trumpets a free press.

6. This propaganda is targetted at AMERICANS, too.
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 05:32 PM by Marr
How many times have we heard the pro-war crowd repeating the talking point, "we don't hear enough about all the GOOD news in Iraq, like...".

7. "We are at war!"
That's the most often-used excuse for this administration's wrong doing. This administration's crimes are so vast, we will be at war until the neocons are booted out.

15. check out this Ron Reagan quote!
starts at 4:44

"We're supposed to be setting an example for these people. They've lived under a dictator for years, who tortured people, for whom the news was whatever he said it was. These people are looking to us for something better, and what do we give them? We give them Abu Gharib and this kind of nonsense."

36. I kept waiting for him to mention the Al-Jazeera bombing
Buchanan seriously said "If we could buy off Al-Jazeera, shouldn't we?" Reagen should've come back & said "And if we can bomb them, we should do that too, right?" Buchanan's position that "war-time" allows the President to spread propaganda leads straight to allowing plans to eliminate unfavorable media outlets. It's just two sides of the same coin.

17. I'm just waiting for this boomerang to whack a certain elephant.
In that discussion Mr. Buchannan says such practices are "probably illegal" in the United States and I'm inclined to think he's correct.

Does anyone here think that this sort of thing has not happened here in the United States as well? Particularly last year when the President was fighting tooth and nail just to get close enough to steal the election?

I loved this part when he talked about if there's so much good news why do WE have to PAY them to write about it? *snicker* Go Ron! So you back it up with lies? Oh yes, I'm sure FDR paid reporters to spread lies. :eyes: Buchanan is such an ass!

At first he says they should spread propoganda and than Matthews asked him if he would like to be lied to in a time of war and he said "no." So why would the Iraqi's like being lied to and every day Americans? What a jackass.

When I see Ron and Pat together on split screen I feel like I have a little Angel and a Devil on my shoulders acting as my conscience. On one side you have the Angel, Ron saying "Oh, no this is bad! We shouldn't do that!" And on the other you have the Devil, Pat saying "It's okay! They won't mind! Do it! No one will notice!"

LOL.
