20. Broussard gave Russert an opening. I know you don't want to hear it.
Broussard was 99.9% on target as this thread indicates, however, he conceded one thing to Russert at the end. That there was blame to go around at the local, state and federal level.

The glaring comeback that would have stopped Russert completely was to remind him that local response in an emergency would have been exhausted after the second day. By that time, the local emergency response would have been exhausted and it would have been enough time for the federal government to have stepped in and taken over.

For example, NOLA showed that even local police have families to take care of. They can stock their families up with goods, but after two days, they need to get back to take care of their own families. So someone needs to step in to take over.

33. What you say is true
And the response of the locals should be examined.

But it is also about proporationality. As you point out, the locals can do only so much. That's why Jimmy Carter created FEMA. That's why he created FEMA as a coabinet level position. That's why he codified the fact that FEMA should be headed by **professionals**. That's why he stipulated that FEMA should never be politicized.

When one weighs culpability, one needs to recognize the inherent limitations of the locals from **any** city or local jurisdiction. They *need* the help of the feds. And that's what was lacking.

Broussard is spot on in his take on things.

Proportionality.

That's the operative word.

64. Exactly. The meme floating around was
"There is PLENTY of blame to go around" The WH apparently faxed that talking point to pols and paid yakkers on an hourly basis in the early days of Katrina.

The reality is that there wasn't "plenty" to go around.

There will almost always be errors made in such large operations, but it appears that the overwhelming amount of responsibility for the failures falls to the feds with the Bush administration leading.

And some of what occurred looks to be negligence. Criminal negligence.

118. Rep. McKinney listed some of the ways FEMA BLOCKED AID to the NOLA
survivors - long list, long speech on bellaciao and rense.com since the left blogosphere ignores the most important speech in history in which Rep. McKinney mentions Impeachment and that word was stricken from the Congressional record which she mentions in the transcripts of this speech on the above from 2 weeks ago but the Left Blogsphere has ignored it.

I thought it took only one Representative to call for impeachment to get the ball rolling but if they censor the Congressional Record... Rep. McKinney should be invited to do article for DU or at least DU should do a story on this speech.

67. Local and State officials were made impotent by the federal gov't...
....the resources needed for any substantial preparations to deal with this situation or any other emergency have been taken away by the tax cuts for the rich...PERIOD...the local and state levels of gov't haven't had the funds that are necessary for a state of emergency....and obviously the inept leadership of FEMA as well was pertinent in the travesty that's befallen my state.

He used to be a liberal, believe it or not. Jack Welch (super RW CEO of GE) loved to brag about how he had shifted TIMMMMMY! to carrying water for the RW. All it took was money and perks--and the fear of losing them--to persuade TIMMMMMY! to switch his allegiance. Bob Somersby, of The Daily Howler, calls it the dominance of "millionaire pundit values."

Re: Meet the Press
Tim Russert literally had his ass handed to him by Mr. Broussard--as well he should have. Russert, do you have no shame for the amount of water- bearing you do for your beloved Bush administration, who keeps you and GE so well funded in arms contracts for their imperial wars? Oh, I guess I just answered that question.

Others developed some conscience during this Katrina Disaster--the Anderson Coopers, Brian Williams, even Faux New's Shepherd Smith. Yet, you go on oblivious to the debaucle and suffering your Bush Cronies have heaped on these people, through their negligence, felonious cronyism, and apathy towards the poor. Well, you are certainly a well paid mouthpiece. I can't quite recall how that meshes with the word of Christ, that you, as a "proud Catholic" proclaim at every convenient juncture.

If you truly have a conscience, may the dead of NOLA-- who will never be accurately counted nor even recovered-- haunt you for abandoning the TRUTH.

Watching Broussard take away Timmy's club and beat him over the head with it was laugh out loud funny. Timmy has become a pathetic and obvious shill for BushCo. and today just highlighted it in spades. I hope other Dems learn to go straight at Timmy's credibility and motivation like Broussard.

Kick, Nominated

I got a comment from my blogsite repeating the smear against Broussard about the timing of the death of the 92 year old woman who drowned and someone wrote in an article that it was like the attack on Dan Rather about Bush's AWOL, the truth about Bush's AWOL was lost in the brouhaha about one forged document fed to CBS by Rove.

It is the power of honesty. Russert was completely baffled by such honesty and directness, sheletered as he is within the cocoon of DC. His $2,000 suit, cynical replay of the first interview, and Washington wiles were completely incapacitated by an honest man in a t-shirt.

61. Burning witches is consistent with all of his comments that the media
show is fake and not based on truth. Western style justice is consistent with the lack of a governmental response (the cavalry didn't come) together with the crying need for justice. Still, it's clear through his acceptance of the concept of the 34 charges filed regarding St. Rita's that he still accepts that there's the court system and he's not *in fact* advocating vigilantism. It's figurative, in other words.

What's also interesting is the process by which one maintains SUCH DISTANCE from Broussard given his undisputed ongoing role in recovery that he's seen as a "quack". Are you sure all compassion cylinders are firing here?

And at least stay out of the fucking way while people with a real, ugly greivance against this government begin to do what DU could never do in a decade of pathetic whinning: bring it down.

There are hundreds of thousands of people scattered all cross this country who would bring the rope and the gasoline to Mr. Broussard barbecue, among them my 82 year old mother.

I suspect many will settle for seeing them all out of office and in jail, but won't settle for much less. Oh, that, and the $200 million-1 trillion dollars it will take to rebuild the gulf coast and the coastal wetlands.

We prefer cash.

42. No mea culpa. Broussard is not totally sane, even if I agree
with 75% of what he said. OK maybe unkind to say quack. Let's say instead, heartfelt, occassionally lucid, one in a while nutty, and not having a judicial temperament.
Further, I blame Bush admin apparently more than Mr. B, who Timmy the neocon got to spread the blame around equally when it failed to let the feds off the hook.

final comment: Broussard was an average guy doing his best. But at times, his "averageness" played no better to me, than, well. Bush's.

62. Zara, there are times when "objectivity" and "judicial temperament"q
in a pure form are totally inappropriate. The first Broussard episode with Tim Russert was tim's "Dukakis moment" when Tim should have had something of an emotional reaction and yet he was totally committed to the professional posture of "objectivity" that he could be nothing but cool and distant. (Recalling Dukakis being asked a hypothetical involving the rape of his own wife, his cool dispassionate reaction was widely panned...)

The really great reporters let some humanity seep through in times of great disaster. not russert.

The "judicial temperament" in an emergency means everyone dies while the judge calmly seeks more facts and contemplates their balance. You are quite wrong to suggest that judicial temperament is something to insist upon here.

Very much so, as a matter of fact. Of course I didn't take the "stringing them up" part literally - I GOT what he meant, and I couldn't agree more. I would guess he's got a higher than average intelligence - he didn't really strike me as "average", and he was quite right about the agenda. I would love to see the guy after he did get a full night's sleep because I thought he was quite powerful answering Timmy's questions - the spoken ones, and the ones he was REALLY asking. I'd put him up against bushit in a heartbeat, and I have no doubt about who would win THAT debate.

Louisiana is a world of its own. Don't take things so literally.
For example, if someone asks you, "are you going to get down?", what do they mean? They're asking you if you're getting out of the car.

Also, I would probably be offended by your response if I knew WTF you were trying to say.

As Mr. Broussard said to Lil Tim, "What kind of black hearted people want to nitpick about the death of a 90 year old woman? ...We didn't bury a box of cheerios".

Maybe someday your family or people you care deeply about will be dead because of C+ Augustus (how do ya like that one) and we can berate, belittle and insult you for not getting the details exactly right a few days after you bury them.

129. Remember: Irony is bitter humor.
Bitter humor is the ONLY humor we can presently console ourselves with.

The Bush cabal self-implodes; we find no joy in that because we mourn for all the horrible damage his administration has wrought.

Bush is not a man. He's a liar and a coward and a criminal. The only music he ever faces is "My Sharona" on his I-Pod.

Aaron Broussard is a brave, intelligent, and honest MAN. He does not hide from responsiblity. We at DU would not call him a quack...

We'd call him a hero.

130. Since when did Democrats engage in group think?
I'll stick with Will Rodgers: I'm not a member of an organized political party. I'm a democrat. The DU I've been reading for several years is definitely not lockstep; unlock the party in power. Though without a doubt this is an emotional issue. By the way, can a person be a brave, intelligent, and honest man, and yet, go overboard? The one comment that I found particularly intelligent was the person who pointed out regional differences in rhetoric, and placed Broussard within the regional mainstream. I thought that was interesting retort. Then there were freeper-like comments from others. Eye opening.

126. Nominated, I am so glad to have proof of the Rovian smear on Mr. Broussard
because so many people are posting that Mr. Broussard's mistaken timeline erases the Bush Regime's crimes in allowing this 92 year old woman and so many others to drown while bush was using the dying people of NOLA to try to blackmail Gov. Blanco into giving up her rightful authority to make decisions about how to handle this disaster which is unprecedented.

Bush went ahead and declared Martial Law anyway as witnessed by the Blackwater Mercenaries and the overwhelming presence of the military including the 82nd Airborne which pointed guns at Brian Williams and his newteam.

Bush needs Martial Law to escape Fitzgerald and others indictments of bush's thugs and himself. With Martial Law all laws are suspended and bush/fema said they were sending 10,000 evacuees to a number of states but only sent a few hundred but the governors who accepted responsibility for the evacuees had to declare a state of emergency when they tried to help the evacuees which is one step from Martial Law and bush today and earlier this week has been pressing for even more authority in disasters to start the cattle cars of US citizens to the Concentration Camps prepared in California. See Above Top Secrets camps and Infowars. Washington Post's new online articles EARLY WARNINGS. At least they are trying to forwarn and forearm the American people a little. Operation Granite Shadow and Geyser are mentioned in detail and the comments are incredible.

The article says: "Counter-Terrorism Special Operations Support to Civil Agencies in the event of a domestic incident" Please note that Constitutionalists are now "terrorists" according to the FBI: http://www.keepandbeararms.com/newsarchives/XcNewsPlus....

The reason this is being kept totally secret is because this isn't about Islamic Terrorists, this is about AMERICANS:

51. My e-mail to Russert:
Mr. Russert,

You and your show are partisan. If there was any doubt, that doubt was erased today by your interview with Aaron Broussard.

You cherry picked comments Broussard had made while undergoing an emotional breakdown, then took the side of some obscure conservative think tank-funded blog (Powerline.com) in order to try and refute Broussard's credibility. This after the man has gone through HELL trying to get food and shelter for the constituents of his parish. Only the most partisan, most craven of conservative pundits would do that. It was slime move, and you ought to be ashamed. What's more, you did it under the cover of OBJECTIVITY.

How dare you, sir? At long last, have you no sense of decency? How much longer can the corporate media continue to push one-party rule on the American people until they start DEMANDING a push in the other direction?

Enjoy all that money Jack Welch has given you....your credibility as a journalist has been irrevocably stripped. You're not a journalist, you're a paid shill of the GOP. Own up to it, realize it, then do the decent thing: retire.

63. Russert quiet back in January
From my post January 9 -- 259 days later people are fighting back ...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

Rather than go to church, I watched the Sunday morning News Discussion shows. They included xNBC's "The Chris Matthews Show" (starring "That Guy From Hardball" as "a less shouty, more sunday-go-to-meeting man"), CBS' "Moon Face The Nation", and "Meet the Press", with Tim "Bills vs. Bush? Bill's get the mandate!" Russert.

"Meet the Press", currently in their 58th year, is the longest running program on network television, which I presume means ALL television, cable, satellite, telegraph, etc., perhaps even in the whole world.

From: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3403008 /
Every Sunday morning for 57 years strong, in times of peace or war, "Meet the Press" is welcomed into the homes of Americans to analyze, discuss and review the news of the week -- and to look ahead to the week to come -- with world-renowned guests.

We are proud to be the highest rated, most watched and most quoted Sunday morning public affairs program. An average audience of 5 million viewers join us each week to share in a national dialogue about the important issues of our time.

In my recollection, since November 2, 2004, there has been no mention on MTP about the election irregularities, the Ohio recount, or anything. If there was, I missed it.

But today's MTP (transcript here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6805000 /) did not mention that little thing that happened on Thursday at all.

The pressure to keep Tim from this actual real story about "America" must be OVERWHELMING. The historic aspect of this alone could tug Tim away from the a Bill's game (well, maybe pre-season ), and yet the ramifications of all this had Tim and his guests almost "talking around" the congressional objection.

It's one thing for MTP/Russert to cave in to the arugment that there was no "real news stories" about events during the previous two months, but today makes me think there really-really-really _is_ some kind of serious pressure on any MSM to "not bring it up at all"

I would hazard a guess that of all MSMers Tim Russert must really be secretly ashamed of himself for the forced complicity he is adhering to.

The only thing WORSE I can imagine is if we'd be hearing the same silence today if, on Thursday, somehow the challenge PASSED!

So is this confirmation that the MSM is beyond the pale in an obvious absence of any notification (might as well call it as it actually is, considering all they really do is notify us of a new WH press-release) and can we finally call their coverage an "Election Vacuum" or maybe even an "Election Blackhole"?

It's one thing for pinko-commie-internets-loving-nigbloggers and hepped-out-frothing-at-the-mount-partisan-soreloser-lawyers to get ignored... but the freaking CONGRESS being ignored??

I Believe!! -- that I am very scared...

I shudda gone to church,

If you watch some of the anchors of shows on Faux, you can tell... those people are truly ignorant believers of the bile they espouse.

But Timmy, he just carries the water for these people. I don't think he seriously believes FEMA and Bush's government weren't responsible for the devastation in LA. He knows it wasn't primarily the local and state government that contributed to all those deaths. Yet he paints a different picture on MTP because they pay him millions of dollars to do so.

He's a true mediawhore.

66. my letter to MTP:
I am very distrurbed by the interview by Russert of Aaron Broussard. Russert-NBC-GE wanted to use this guy and a dead 92 year old woman to make a cheap political point for the Republican party, namely to deflect responsibiliy from the federal government. To even try to propagate this propaganda after the whole world saw tens of thousands of starving and thirsty evacuees stranded in New Orleans, barred from leaving the city by law enforcement personnel, etc etc is totally pathetic and desperate. Tim's performance on today's show was just as outrageous as Sen. Saxby Chambliss' (GA) campaign ad showing Osama bin Laden's photo superimposed on war hero Sen Max Cleland. What great company y'all keep! If Tim Russert is really a shill for GE as 'some bloggers' claim (if you cannot tell, I am now using similar sources to what you now find suitable to use on the air...) then GE better find a new guy because Tim was not too slick today.

Karl Rove told him he would give him a nickel for every time he used the phrase "state, local and federal". That is the talking point and umbrella the administration has been using to try to deflect the shitstorm away from their horrific, pathetic, criminally negligent response to Katrina.

Broussard seems more than willing to take on anyone and defend his local responders. His point about the Peter Principle squared could not be more on target and also reflects back on his original "Death by Bureaucracy" statement.

Russerts attempt to discredit Broussard only discredited himself.

Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 03:31 PM by ClintonTyree
that just about says it all. The Black Hearts in the bush administration are in full spin mode trying desperately to shift blame anywhere but where it actually belongs.

The Black Hearts; the bush cabal, their Corporate overlords, and the Corporate Media all whirling like Dervishes in order to get the boy king's approval numbers high enough so they can continue the rape and torture of our country and the world. There's not a sympathetic or empathetic bone in their collective bodies, the Black Hearts. Money and power are their life-blood, the only thing that means anything to them and they see it slipping away. The Black Hearts, who will falsely trash anyone's credibility and character in order to cement their hold on power and the purse-strings of America. The Black Hearts, who profess to be The Righteous Stewards of our country's moral essence, while behind the scenes they do anything within their power to rob the poor and are guilty of just as many or more moral indiscretions as their counterparts.

The Black Hearts. We cannot wait any longer to remove these hideous demons from the halls of power in our country. America will never regain it's collective soul until the Black Hearts are removed. The Black Hearts must go, now.

104. Chertoff is like Mike Brown...
useless and expendable and can be gotten rid of very easily. BTW, did you know that Mike Brown is still on the FEMA payroll? Grilling Chertoff takes the heat off the WH.

I wrote to MTP and Russert re Broussard's masterful appearances and his success in making Russert look like a pig-faced fool. Both times.

Russert's wife works for some big Republican or the WH or something, doesn't she? I mean with them, it's a right-wing family affair, isn't it?

Well, when Broussard finished with Russert today, I bet they had to bring toilet paper to clean Russert's chair.

The powers-that-be won't let this go. They are going to go after Broussard with everything they can, including the Swift-Boat liars because he called a spade a spade. "Murder" is exactly what it was.

What an asswipe. He tried to blind-side Broussard, and got kicked in the nuts instead. Bravo.

90. What would big russ think
I saw russerts pos book marked down 50% in barnes & noble the other day and when I saw the last part of this interview today it made me think. Mr. Broussard apparently represents a lot of working people, people just like "big russ". I think big russ, if he actually exists, would be ashamed of the way his fat bug eyed son has sold out to the rich and powerful and how he has forgotten where he came from.

Unless of course its all bullshit like bill oreilly's "working class" childhood.

93. Bravo, Mr. Broussard, Bravo!!
And shame on Timmy for ambushing Mr. Broussard like that, with audio from his first interview. What was the point of THAT? Not saying he shouldn't have played it, but he should have given a heads up -- oh wait, then that would mean there was a human being inside Timmy's suit!

I was incredibly impressed with Mr. Broussard's response to Timmy and "some bloggers". He didn't mince words, he told it like it is. Just wow!

97. Russert thought...
...he'd have an easy time carving up Broussard and maybe force some kind of "I stand corrected" defensive posture. Instead Broussard ripped out the corporate media whore's black heart.

99. Buzzflash had a link to a Blog
http://karenas.typepad.com/my_weblog/2005/09/disgusting...

"However, the most telling part of the interview was what Tim Russert DID NOT do. He did not replay the portion of Aaron Broussard's statement from Katrina where Aaron said that FEMA came in and cut off his emergency communication lines. He did not replay the part of the tape where Aaron Broussard said Sheriff Harry Lee restored the communications lines and posted armed guards on them to prevent FEMA from cutting the lines again.

Russert did not replay the portion of Broussard's previous interview where Broussard tells the nation that FEMA turned away three Wal-Mart trucks full of water en route to Jefferson Parish. He also does not replay Broussard telling the story of the Coast Guard offering fuel, but when people from Jefferson Parrish showed up to get the fuel the Coast Guard told them that FEMA had instructed them not to give them the fuel. You can read the transcript from the September 4th interview here by scrolling down.

Why did Tim Russert leave out the most damning part of Broussard's case against the Federal government, and focus on how Broussard got the date of the death of his employee's mother wrong?

This was a blatant attempt by Russert, who appeared to be nothing more than a propaganda arm of the Federal government, to discredit their biggest detractor, Aaron Broussard. Tim Russert should wallow in shame and admit his entire story was designed to prop up Bush at the expense of Aaron Broussard and a dead woman."

A Must Read Blog Tim!

109. You're right. The only part of the previous interview that was
played was the part where he got his facts skewed. I think that this attempt to discredit him was to somehow show that everything he had said during the first interview was false. I think their tactics backfired on them.

101. That whole show had me blinking my eyes in disbelief.
First, Aaron Broussard refused to allow Tim to browbeat him into submission.

Then, Maureen Dowd was on, doing her thing, and the new tamed-down version of David Brooks. They talked about the march and how many people were there!

That was, to me, absolutely incredible.

103. My reply to MTP/Russert
My letter to MTP...

"Meet The Press: 9/25/05 Aaron Broussard

To the Producers of Meet The Press and Mr. Tim Russert:

Today was the last time I will watch Meet The Press as long as Mr. Tim Russert hosts.

I am utterly disgusted.

Mr. Russert's 'interview' of Mr. Broussard was nothing but an attempt to ambush him on national TV. Unfortunately for Mr. Russert, it backfired in his face.

Mr. Russert, do you have a heart? Or did you sell that along with your soul when you decided to become FEMA's apologist mouthpiece?

The entire guts of Russert's 'interview' was to try to discredit Mr. Broussard because he got the date wrong on the death of the poor woman that drowned in the nursing home.

This is what Meet The Press decided to concentrate on after the first interview with Mr. Broussard? That a woman died, but it wasn't on the exact day that Mr. Broussard described as he broke down in tears? And then Mr. Russert had the nerve to try to use this discrepancy to attack Mr. Broussard about his criticism of FEMA!

Gee, I wonder, Mr. Russert, why you didn't ask about the other outrages Mr. Broussard mentioned in his first interview, such as:

*When FEMA came in and cut off Mr. Broussard's emergency communication lines.

*When FEMA turned away three Wal-Mart trucks full of water en route to Jefferson Parish.

*How the Coast Guard offered Jefferson Parish fuel, but when people from the parish showed up to get the fuel, the Coast Guard told them that FEMA had instructed them not to give the parish the fuel.

Those nasty questions about FEMA don't help this administration, so I guess Mr. Russert didn't think they were newsworthy.

Mr. Broussard was absolutely right when he said FEMA is guilt of murder. And as Mr. Broussard also said, there will be plenty of blame to go around to all levels of the govt.

However, Mr. Russert, your attempt to discredit a true hero of the aftermath of Katrina may indeed be the biggest blunder in your career.

Mr. Russert, if you smell something burning, it is the last tattered shreds of your journalist integrity. They just went up in smoke...

You, and Meet The Press, should be ashamed of yourselves."

Mr. Russert, concerning your interview this past Sunday with President Broussard, I was struck dumb by the underlying meanspiritedness of your line of questioning.

I wonder if Big Russ is proud of you for that?
