Edwards: Wife Now Free Of Cancer

(AP) RALEIGH, N.C. The wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards is now cancer-free, her husband says.

Diagnosed with breast cancer a day after Edwards and Sen. John Kerry conceded the 2004 election to President Bush, Elizabeth Edwards underwent several months of radiation and chemotherapy. But recent tests have shown that she is now rid of the cancer, her husband told reporters after a speech in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.

"We had a whole group of tests about three weeks ago and the doctor said they were all great results," Edwards said.

While John Edwards is "strongly considering" another push for the executive office, the former North Carolina senator has cited the health of his wife as a major factor in determining whether or not he would continue with the effort. In a recent poll of Iowa Democrats, Edwards ranked at the top of a list of potential presidential candidates, outpacing Sen. Hillary Clinton.

My mother has survived 2 bouts with BC - the first when she was 33 years old and again last year in her other breast (she is 67 yo).

We're getting ready to leave Sunday on a "chick trip" to FL - me, mom, my sister, and my 2 daughters - in celebration of life. It's been a tough year for all of us since Dad passed in December, I won't go into all the other gory details, but we girls are GONNA HAVE FUN!

Again, I'm very happy for all members of the Edwards family. I saw them in Greensburg, PA right after the Democratic Convention in 04 along with JK, Ben, et al, and I love them all. I can appreciate the struggle it has been for them. It is SO uplifting to be diagnosed cancer-free after such a scare.

We are lucky that we live in a time when these sort of happy medical outcomes are possible, WHEN you have access to them, as so many Americans do not.

But if I know John Edwards -- he's the kinda guy who will fight to get this same access to cutting edge medical care for ALL Americans.

Blessings on him for his work on behalf of the poor. Gosh -- I'm old enough to remember the mercies Lyndon Johnson achieved for low income Americans -- but it seems that lifting Americans out of poverty and providing them with a decent quality of life is now a goal that is ridiculed, and persons down on their luck are now villified. John Edwards is one of the few who has not abandoned the less fortunate Americans, and he has my deepest respect and support.

... but is now gone -- or that it returned after initial treatment? Or did it go away immediately with treatment and the regular follow up testing simply shows she continues to be cancer-free?

The thing about breast cancer, unfortunately, is that it's one cancer that is never considered "cured" ... it can return at any time. I'm sixteen years post diagnosis and my doctor still trots me in for regular check ups just to be sure all's well.

Like the rest of you, I adore Elizabeth Edwards.

But it isn't possible to say she's "cancer free" at this point. What one CAN say is that tests INDICATE that she's cancer-free. She won't know for sure for a long while. Micro metastases are a real possbility for a LONG while. I hope for the best for Ms. Edwards-- she's a cool woman.
