Schiavo Case Taking on Political Tone (AP)
WASHINGTON - Terri Schiavo's personal tragedy is taking on a more political tone in Congress, where House Majority Leader Tom DeLay likens the struggle over her fate to attacks on himself, and a Democratic critic accuses Republicans of opportunism.

"I find it shameful that Mr. DeLay and Republicans have used Ms. Schiavo as their political pawn to kowtow to their conservative base," Rep. Robert Wexler (news, bio, voting record), D-Fla., said Wednesday as House GOP leaders filed court papers in an increasingly desperate attempt to keep the brain-damaged Florida woman alive.

"It's unfortunate that he thinks his situation is like Terri Schiavo's," added Rep. Rahm Emanuel (news, bio, voting record) of Illinois, chairman of the House Democratic campaign committee. "That's a distorted view."

For his part, DeLay cast the debate over Schiavo in religious and political terms at the same time.

"One thing that God has brought to us is Terri Schiavo to elevate the visibility of what is going on in America, that Americans would be so barbaric as to pull a feeding tube out of a person that is lucid and starve them to death," he said in remarks Friday to a conservative group and made public Wednesday.

19. They wanted to be careful
not to hurt the GOP image. But the blogs have done more than enough to cover the real motives behind this story, so the MSM probably figured they needed to catch up.

16. It's breathtaking how detached from reality he gets.
He lies with aplomb ... peddling deceit and fraud with every sentence he utters.

6. Tom DeLay is trying to mobilize his brownshirts...
I cannot stand that pig. He's the lowest of the low. He's running around talking about God and morality when he ought to be in prison. If I were him, I'd watch out for lightning bolts from the sky.

7. it's more than just an issue over a feeding tube
it's the government interferring into our lives

For many years the Republicans have fought against a National Health Care system. They have labeled it socialized medicine. Their reasoning asks Do you want the government making medical decisions for you or your family?.

Yet, during the weekend of March 19-20 the Republicans flip-flopped on their own talking points. The Republican administration is now making medical decisions for you.

From their own talking points do you want this government making medical decisions for you or your family?

do I want the government making medical decisions for me? certainly NOT this GOPer government

15. Delay Sure Isn't
unbelievable.

Last nigth, for the first time since this whole thing started, I turned my tv onto CNN and watched one of their umpteen panel discussions. I could not believe some of the outright lies being told, and unquestioned.

11. Delay presents levels of lying previously unknown
"that Americans would be so barbaric as to pull a feeding tube out of a person that is lucid and starve them to death"

If it were not for the fact that his statement is an out and out lie Americans would be very concerned about it.

The level of lying that the Republicans and their Christian interest groups have descended to in the last 48 house has left me completely speechless. It is such that it is now taking on and exhibiting characteristics of a pathological nature.

12. Hello pot? This is kettle...you're black!
"that Americans would be so barbaric as to pull a feeding tube out of a person that is lucid and starve them to death."

Does DeLay fail to remember the law his own leader passed in Texas that said insurance companies could make the call to do just that for monetary reasons?

14. Terri is "lucid"?
Cripes man, DeLay is insane.

People are removed off of life support all the time. Including feeding tubes, which in some instances (like Schiavo's) is life support.

He is comparing himself to a brain damaged woman in a vegetative state who is dying? What, did she kill some kittens before her collapse?

Perhaps he'd feel more comfortable with it if they shipped people like Terri over to Iraq and dropped bombs on them. Then they could pass it off as collateral damage.

22. The Obscenity that is DeLay
He dares compare his situation to that of Terri Schiavo?!? This humanoid biped truly, Truly has NO Shame. I hope those faxes with the Joseph Welch quote are waist-deep in his office by now.

If there is any rationality left in this country, this beast will be leaving his high post in shame and crawling back under his rock, soon.

"This is exactly the issue that is going on in America, of attacks against the conservative movement, against me and against many others," added DeLay, lately at the center of a controversy concerning his overseas travel.

(snip)

"The point is the other side has figured out how to win and defeat the conservative movement," he said after mentioning Schiavo, "and that is to go after people personally, charge them with frivolous charges and link that up with all these do-gooder organizations funded by George Soros and then get the national media on their side.

"That whole syndicate that they have going on right now is for one purpose and one purpose only, and that's to destroy the conservative movement. It's to destroy conservative leaders." Soros is a billionaire who contributed several million dollars last year to the unsuccessful effort to deny President Bush a second term.

24. the other side has figured out how to win and defeat
Well, Tom may be correct on this statement. The Republicans wrote the book on going after people personally and charging them with frivolous charges. Hopefully that book has been studied and some lessons learned. On the other hand, I don't think the charges made against Delay are frivolous. If the result of investigating him results in the destruction of the conservative movement--too bad.
