We lost our home to fire in '05. For all intents and purposes we lost everything. What the fire didn't get, the smoke, water and theft finished off. Our loss included pets but no humans, thankfully. Since that day forward, I can feel the pain these people go through, it's like you've lost your security/safe place/treasure trove/reality.
Horrible feeling and you'll never forget it. To this day, it's difficult to look at the remnants of someone's home and wonder how they will deal with all the losses involved.
