"White" Americans might be partly white, part black, part red, part yellow, part brown, or any imaginable combination therein...

Division by race is a concept that (should have) died with the advent of biological science in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The descendents of Thomas Jefferson, for instance, are merely the tip of the iceberg. There are very few "pure white" Americans to speak of.
