School Buses Could Soon Display Ads

ORLANDO, Fla. -- It is common to see advertisements plastered on scoreboards at high school sports stadiums. Someday, those same ads could appear on the sides of school buses as a way to generate more money for education.

"I think bus advertising is a very creative way for districts to use free-market principles to raise money to meet transportation needs," said Orange County School Board Member Christine Moore, who has been urging Florida legislators to change the law that currently bans school bus advertising.

If approved, 50 percent of all revenue from the bus ads will go toward school district transportation. Ten percent would be earmarked for driver education programs. The rest of the money could be spent on other school programs.

"As a marketing major, I guess I can see the benefits of raising money if it goes to the right cause," said parent Jeff Stafford. "As long as they're tasteful ads and it's not anything that's going to upset any parents, I think it will probably be OK."
