49. Clinton had nothing to do with that - a top McCain staffer suggested it to Kerry
and Kerry and McCain spoke, but Kerry would not even consider it unless McCain became a Democrat. They found they were too far apart on too many issues and McCain could never be a Democrat. (It was a ticket that would likely have won - and it would have been much harder to attack Kerry's service record. It never would have worked because there would have been nothing in it for McCain. )

McCain/Leiberman did make sense as they do agree on quite a bit - and Leiberman might have switched to be on the ticket. i think it would have been a much harder to ticket to beat than McCain/Palin.
