68. To brutalize means treating someone harshly or cruelly
but the root is brute so, i.e., without human compassion. We flatter ourselves by comparing people to animals favorably.

Bloodying a 70 year old pacifist and trying to put him in a headlock instead of resolving the situation with language is precisely brutal.
