(my child hood crush) Veronica Lake. It was an oblique approach that was a somewhat comedy for the first half.... then turned serious.

On the other hand, and to support your view, "It Happened One Night" and many similar films depicted the idle rich as somehow desperately unhappy until they meet with a broke but carefree untermench and learn the true value of life.... or something.
