Reply #23: Chicago blizzard'67....stranded in school overnight

[State the Obvious]

I was teaching in a suburban area of Chicago at the time.....the snow came in so fast, that several school buses could not get in to pick up the children. The Red Cross was able to get us some food and cots, and we spent the night at the school. The ditches along side of the road were so deep and filled with snow, we were afraid to let any of the younger children try to make it home. The next day, many of the high school boys got together, trekked through the snow to the school and carried the younger students piggyback to safer areas near their homes. To this day, it still brings tears to my eyes when I think of how happy we all were to see them. There is so much GOOD in people......especially the teenagers that helped us out that day.
