2. Celebrities have a lot to lose by participating.
Not someone like Hannah, whom I believe is an heiress. Still, apparently her career had meaning for her beyond money and she is gifted. Not everyone could pull off playing a mermaid even semi-believably. And the goofy, frumpy character whom she played in Steel Magnolias.

If a producer feels your politics could cause a signficant portion of what's left of movie ticket buyers, odds are you will not get cast.

Then again, some celebrities also have a lot to gain. Would Pete Seeger or Bob Dylan have had careers that were as successful as theirs had they not spoke for causes? (Dylan claims that he never did so intentionally, but give me a damned break, Bob. Blowin' in the Wind and Maggie's Farm were not neutral songs. Neither were the ones you wrote during your Born Again period. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slow_Train_Coming (warning: shall we say, not the most objectively-written wiki article?)
