Hell, it was not that long ago that we all accepted that working in the Post Office was stressful enough to cause folks to "go Postal" and start shooting co-workers.

And, as you said, there is the possibility that he had suffered brain damage.

But, whether it was "battle fatigue, Post Traumatic Stress "Disorder," or brain damage, clearly, he was not thinking straight.
