They have been portrayed as such in one way or another since the 1979 revolution and hostage crisis. A couple months from now will mark the tenth anniversary of Bush declaring them part of the 'axis of evil.' Their nuclear program has been in the news off and on for at least as long.

Here's a rather tongue-in-cheek piece from 1992 which appeared in 'Parameters,' the academic journal of the US Army War College. The piece is called 'The Origins of the American Military Coup of 2012.' It's more a critique of blurring lines between the civilian and military sectors, but it's amusing to note that one of the events that sparks the fictional coup is an Iranian invasion of the Gulf states and subsequent Iranian victory over US forces.
