And even in the 1970s, the politicians in the Senate needed money for their re-election campaigns, so obviously there is a temptation to cater to the wealthy 1% who can donate the most money. A favor they could pay back would at least be to give consent to an economic right-winger to the Supreme Court whenever the president does pick one.
