Yes, it was theft, but worthy of punishment? I'd say staving isn't a punishable crime. And don't say the hunger wasn't the crime, that it was the theft. I swear you sound just like a red in a blue state.

What would you have the guy do? Beg? He likely tried that.

Try to remember there are no absolutes.
