who want increases in taxes on the richest members of society but don't want ANY benefit cuts for the elderly and the extremist on the right who only want cuts in benefits for the elderly but don't want ANY tax increases on the richest members of society.
I guess with that is the range of respectable opinion - so those who might want more benefits for the elderly and major increases in taxes on the wealthiest members of society - are way beyond the pale.
That's what becomes the center when there is no left - only center-right and far right. Somehow or other it doesn't seem the Democratic Party leadership is getting the message from the streets anymore than the Republican Party leadership - at least yet anyway.
