A part of human nature involves attempting to destroy what one fears -- and in this context, "fear" is far more important than "hate" and/or "despise." In Gandhi's attempts to liberate the nation of India, he confronted English powers who tended to either like him, at some level, or at least find his tactics non-intimidating.

Ho Chi Minh made the comment that had Gandhi been born in Vietnam, no one would have ever heard of him, because he would have been dead at that exact moment he began his nonviolent resistence. When one considers the history of the Buddhist protests in that country, it appears that Ho was correct. That does not imply that Gandhian tactics are any less "correct" in one context or another; simply that one must be aware of the range of opposition tactics.

We will continue to see "fear" of the protests being used to seed hatred, and soon violence, in our nation.
