Why do people think that any old boneheaded, evidenceless, deliberately hateful opinion is somehow the equal of a whole court case, or the scientific summary of thousands of studies, or statistics indicating the opinion of two thirds of the whole nation?

In most cases, other people really don't give two tiny turds for your opinion - if they want anything, they want the data you used to form the opinion from.
