Clinton came into office in '93 and promised that he would repeal the ban on gays in the military with executive order. The second he did this, the right wing with the full support military brass, including the joint chiefs, waged a major PR campaign against Clinton. They painted him as an out of touch liberal, who had never served, trying to push a radical social agenda on a brave men and women in uniform. Their campaign was so successful that bipartisan congressional majorities were ready to pass a law that would override his executive order. DADT was the compromise we got out of that fiasco.

Obama, who also had never served, was faced with a similar problem. Therefore, letting Admiral Mullen and Secretary Gates be the faces of repealing DADT was an incredibly smart move, even though it took longer. Yes, Dan Choi got screwed. Yes, Obama is moving way too fucking slow on gay rights. Yes, his position on marriage equality is fucking ridiculous. But he got this one right.
