90. Religion should be out of public schools-mostly
Edited on Wed Aug-24-11 03:48 PM by kwolf68
We are losing art and music classes. We are pushing our kids to learn to regurgitate tests so as to pass the SOL. We don't have time to add religion to a school system already missing quality extra-curricular activities that actually help in the math and sciences.

Dedication to math, English, and science should be the agenda of schools, not religion. They have Sunday school for a reason.

Also, there is nothing to 'study' about religion unless you're talking about an anthropology class (which is more college level stuff). As far as a Christian study of 'religion' is concerned what they teach you is the word of the Bible is law and then they toss in their self-approved interpretations of that law.

Teaching religion in public schools from the standpoint of it being an acceptable, legitimate discipline is fail. If it is to come back to schools, then classes for such should be placed in the mythology hall, alongside classes about Medusa and Neptune.

As far as evolution, don't worry there has been NO MENTION of it in any science class my kids have taken so far (my oldest is now in 8th grade). Although evolution is an observed phenomena and also is the most logical and peer-reviewed explanation of how and why birds fly, a platypus lays eggs even though it's a mammal, and why animals (to include our own species) have vestigial organs (pieces of our body that are USELESS that we could simply do without...talk about some brilliant "Intelligent Design).

As someone with a B.S. in Biology and a M.S. in Environmental Science I will and can accept religion (of all kinds) being taught in schools under the right circumstances, but the moment those classes end up on my side of campus is when I have a SERIOUS problem.
