In tangible terms, how does this work to elect a Dem in 2012 vs a Rep?

Isn't this something that should be considered for the 2016 Dem nomination?...I just don't see how talking about alternatives, and in the same sentence acknowledging Obama as the candidate, actually accomplishes anything.
