I've spent enough time in the UK to undersand that there are some serious differences in our languages. Gossiping with your friends in the UK is just talking about other people. Gossiping in the U.S. is generally considered slanderous. I don't know where you get off calling my post ridiculous, but it's borne of my own experience in both countries.

And natter = chatter. It's neither positive or negative. It's just talking.

Now, "nattering on" is an insult, but that's because SOME PEOPLE don't know when to shut the fuck up. That bit is apparently universal to both sides of the Atlantic.
