They're kids, or at least kid like. (Yeah, they have their own apartment together. I think we're supposed to overlook that.) I think having gay adults on Sesame Street would be the way to go on this one. A "gay identity" is too complex for kids to understand at this age--they see people as people. If Bert and/or Ernie really have a gay identity, fine, but it doesn't have to be flagged as such. Being in a relationship is what adults do, and since Bert and Ernie aren't real adults, they should be left out of the gay marriage/relationship equation. Just introduce a gay human couple on Sesame Street. (Although hold onto your hats if anyone ever tried to do that. The Right-wing nutzis would go bonkers.)
