They knew the debt ceiling would have to be raised. The debt ceiling has been raised many times in the past, and it was never a surprise or a crisis.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that we needed to be in a position of emergency meetings behind closed doors, outside of the view of Americans, in order to rush a "deal" involving fundamental social programs.

Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit. There is no justification for rushing through changes to this bedrock social program within a couple of WEEKS, behind closed doors, with the timing such that the American people have no opportunity to know what is going on or weigh in.

It is a manufactured crisis to keep Americans out of the process, and it is an outrage.
