Car safety features are designed for average sized adults. Even if stringent training magically reduced accidents by your asspulled 90% figure, small children need specially designed restraints to survive even minor collisions. Infants, for example, suffer fatal head and neck injuries in even minor accidents when they are not in rear-facing seats, as a function of their anatomy.

One way that Europe is head-and-shoulders ahead of the US? Safety seats. Kids in Scandanavian countries rear-face in specially designed seats until they're five or six. Their child accident safety statistics put ours to shame. It's not because accidents don't happen- inclement conditions make them statistically inevitable even with well-trained drivers- but because they have safer cars and safer child seats.
