Recognition of same-sex unions .........Canada Yes..................................US varies by state

Same-sex marriage .......................Canada since 2003 nationwide since 2005 .. US varies by state majority no

Same-sex adoption........................Canada yes ................................US Single gay persons may adopt, laws on couples vary by state

Allows gays to serve openly in military?.. Canada 1992 ..............................US in theory yes, in practice no

Anti-discrimination Laws (sexual orientation) Canada Bans all anti-gay discrimination, including hate speech
...................................US No federal protections. Banned in 20 states. Included in the federal hate crimes law since 2009

Anti-discrimination Laws concerning gender identity/expression Canada Sex changes legally recognized; Explicit anti-discrimination protections only in NWT, implicit elsewhere; ...US No federal protections. Banned in 13 states. Included in the federal hate crimes law since 2009.

Then when you get to other things, like universal health care and legislated paid parental leave Canada yes ... US no (only unpaid parental leave)
