so in that sense it is a "money making venture". I'm quite sure MSNBC like other networks use focus groups to determine what holds the viewers attention. This kind of news reporting has been prevalent ever since the beginning of 24/7 news stations.

I don't think the viewer's attention span is the only consideration, but it certainly appears to be an important one.
