At the New Hampshire Republican Debate on 13 June 2011, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann referred to the Environmental Protection Agency as a "job killer" suggesting that its regulation of business as unAmerican. Well let's just pause for a moment and see what the EPA has done for the American people.
The EPA was proposed by President Richard Nixon and began operation on December 3, 1970. Nixon, a Republican, could never be described as a job killing liberal.
The EPA has 27 laboratories across the United States for testing air, soil, and water to ensure the health and well being of the American people. When milk in the US was being tested following the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster, it was EPA labs that made sure our farms were safe.
In 1992 the EPA launched the Energy Star program, a voluntary program that fosters energy efficiency. Energy Star not only reduced our energy consumption, but helped millions of American families choose products that would save them hundreds of dollars on their energy bills every year.
The EPA ensures safe drinking water for all Americans. What this means for those of us that get our water from surface sources (resevoirs and rivers), the EPA can regulate business and farms so that runoff does not enter the water supply. For those in the US who get their water from ground sources (wells) the EPA regulates things like underground storage of gasoline tanks to ensure the water is safe. Michele Bachman doesn't seem to understand that the rights of the water drinking public far outweigh the business interests of a developer who wants to pave over a former gasoline station to build condos.
