President Obama has my vote just because he has a (D) after his name. That being said unemployment was 7.2% in November of 1984 after hitting a high of 10.8% in November of 1982. That's 7.2% number looks pretty good in comparison and allowed Reagan to run a "Morning In America" reelection campaign. You and I probably believe it wasn't "Morning In America" but fifty nine percent of our fellow voting Americans disagreed with us.

Can you really see President Obama running a "Morning In America" campaign?

You are right. The 7.2 figure is just a number. You could even say it's an artifact. My point is more or less subtle, depending on your point of view. If a plurality or majority of Americans think the economy is headed in the wrong direction they are probably not going to rehire or reelect the incumbent who presided over said economy.
