44. See, here's the way I see it:

No one is expecting everyone to agree on policy. Do you agree with everything that, say, your mother thinks? Your spouse or partner? Your children? Of course not. The Republicans have convinced themselves that to support their leaders, they MUST support everything that person says, thinks, or does. That is a false equivalency, and it will be their undoing. But I'm convinced that we, on the other side, have swallowed the poison of the past ten years, too. We seem to think that, in order to disagree with our leaders, we have to tear them down, mock them, question their motivations, and generally pick them apart for all the world to see. We put the title President in quotation marks in front of Obama's name. (Yes, I've seen that on the front page in a diary on a different site.) I'm sure a lot of savvy Republicans are eating this for breakfast.

I think supporting President Obama (and yeah, he is the president--he doesn't get quotation marks) means solidarity. And by saying I support the president, I support everyone else in the party that I disagree with. Solidarity on our end of things scares the crap out of Republicans.

And one more thing: principles tend to be cold, hard, inflexible things. Principles ain't people. When I see what comes out of this "deal," I may hate it with every fiber of my being. But I still support the president. That is all.
