Because if you were to ask voters in many states about Romney, Pawlenty, et al they'd most likely have a higher regard for these candidates than they did for Dole in 96
In addition, I would add that Beck's emergence within the Republican Party boosts Romney by several points.
Beck is popular with many evangelicals (and their followers) and he is Mormon
Romney is not the radical firebrand that Beck is, but he benefits from Beck making evangelicals more trustful of Mormons.
If the economy doesn't right itself, I would bet Obama does not do better in 2012 than in 08

But, I will also add, than (as I've said many times) 6 months is a lifetime in politics.
Much can happen between now-and-then
I'm not even convinced we'll do that badly in November

Harry Reid was considered DOA in January, but the republikkans gave their nod to Angle and now he leads
Let's see how many other tea baggers doom the Republicans
