Reply #13: The President can be sworn in by any Judge

In the aftermath of the Kennedy assasination, white house aides scrambled around Dallas to find any judge they could to swear in Johnson. The oath was administered by a female county judge, whose name I can't recall, on air force one, a couple of hours after Kennedy died.

It's "traditional" for the Chief Justice to swear in Presidents, but it is by no means *required*.
